Chapter 27 - The Zurich Phantom

The phone pressed tightly against my ear, the transatlantic static hissing softly like a distant wave crashing against an empty shore.

“Who is this?” I demanded, my voice dropping into a sharp, commanding tone that instantly made David Vance stop pacing across the hardwood floor and snap his attention toward me.

The man on the other end chuckled softly—a low, smooth, unhurried sound that carried an unsettling aura of absolute control.

“Forgive me, Grace. I suppose my introduction was a bit abrupt,” the voice replied, speaking with that polished, continental European cadence. “My name is Viktor Vance—no relation to your esteemed legal counsel standing beside you, I assure you. I am the former managing director of Swiss-Atlantic Trust & Holdings out of Zurich. And contrary to what your late grandfather Arthur or your imprisoned cousin Julian led you to believe... I am the man who actually holds the keys to the true Sterling legacy.”

I felt the blood drain rapidly from my face, but I forced my breathing to remain slow and controlled. I caught David’s eye, gesturing frantically for him to pull out his phone and initiate an emergency trace protocol. David’s eyes widened; he whipped his mobile out of his pocket within a fraction of a second, typing rapidly under the screen.

“Julian claimed the maritime trust was fabricated last week,” I said, keeping my voice level, buying as much time as possible for David’s trace to lock onto the satellite relay. “And federal investigators proved he forged Arthur’s biometric signature. If you’re calling from Zurich to try and pull another scam, save your breath. The U.S. Attorney’s office is already fully briefed on every shell corporation your bank ever touched.”

Viktor laughed again—this time with a hint of genuine amusement.

“Oh, Julian is a fool,” Viktor replied smoothly. “A loud, arrogant, clumsy amateur who thought he could outsmart the modern global banking system with a consumer-grade software program. He never understood the architecture of the trust, Grace. Because Arthur never trusted him with the real secrets. Arthur only trusted one person with the true master ledger.”

“And who was that?” I asked, my grip tightening around my phone until my knuckles turned stark white.

“You, my dear,” Viktor whispered softly across the digital divide. “Arthur didn't die in a plane crash in 2012. And he didn't leave his empire to an ungrateful family of vultures who spent decades tearing each other apart. He set up a secondary, untraceable continuity trust specifically designed to activate the moment someone in the family proved themselves strong enough to dismantle the corruption from within.”

David suddenly held up his phone screen toward me, displaying a flashing green confirmation icon: *TRACE LOCKED — LOCATION: PRIVATE SECURE SERVER, ZURICH FINANCIAL DISTRICT.*

“If my grandfather is still alive,” I said, my voice hardening into steel as I stared down at the coffee table, “then why hasn't he contacted me himself?”

Viktor’s tone turned cold, razor-sharp, and deeply serious.

“Because, Grace... he couldn't. Not until the house of cards built by Julian and Arthur’s corporate rivals had completely burned to the ground. And now that the ashes are clearing... your grandfather is ready to step out of the shadows. But there is a condition. A final test.”
