Chapter 5 - The Crimson Sirens and the Escape

The flashing red and blue strobes of half a dozen federal SUVs illuminated the front of the Maple Street house, casting frantic, erratic shadows across the white siding. Bullhorns crackled through the chilly night air, demanding that everyone inside exit with their hands visible.

"This is the Federal Bureau of Investigation! The premises are surrounded! Come out with your hands on your head!"

Inside the hallway, Marcus stood by the back door, holding a heavy tactical riot shield. "Boss, the front is completely blocked by tactical units. They’ve got snipers on the neighboring rooflines. We can't go out the front."

"Who called them?" Luca’s voice was ice-cold as he looked down at Vanessa, who was cowering against the wall.

"I... I had a dead-man’s switch set up on my phone!" Vanessa whimpered, shielding her face with her cuffed hands. "If I didn't check in with my attorney by midnight, an automated packet of documents goes straight to the U.S. Attorney’s office! I didn't think the feds would move this fast!"

Luca didn't waste a single breath on anger. He reached out, grabbed Vanessa by the collar of her ruined red silk dress, and hauled her to her feet with one hand.

"You’re coming with us," Luca said smoothly. "If the feds want to play games, they can negotiate with a hostage who knows where all the bodies are buried."

"Dad, no!" Emily cried out, clutching her stomach as the sound of a battering ram hit the front door upstairs with a deafening *CRASH*. "We can't take hostages! That’s kidnapping on a federal level! It’ll make things ten times worse!"

Luca looked at his daughter, his expression softening for a fraction of a second. He saw the pure, unadulterated terror in her eyes, mixed with the fierce, protective instinct of an expectant mother. He realized she was right. He had spent his whole life fighting shadows with violence; if he wanted to protect his grandchild, he needed to play a smarter game.

"Marcus," Luca barked, releasing Vanessa so violently she stumbled into the arms of a guard.

"Boss?"

"Leave her here."

Marcus blinked in surprise. "Boss? She’s the one who leaked the location!"

"Let the feds have her," Luca said, his eyes flashing with dark amusement. "Let her explain to the federal prosecutor why she was breaking into a dead woman’s house to steal files that implicate her own holding company in securities fraud. She wanted a federal case? Give her the front-row seat."

Vanessa’s face went chalk-white. "No! Luca, you can't leave me here! They’ll lock me away for twenty years!"

"You should have thought of that before you tried to rob my family," Luca said coldly. He turned to Emily, wrapping a warm woolen scarf around her neck and pulling her coat tight. "Come on, Em. Through the cellar bulkhead doors. Our ride is waiting in the alley behind the garage."

As the front door upstairs splintered open and heavy tactical boots swarmed down the hallway, Luca and Emily slipped out through the hidden basement storm doors into the damp, foggy back alley.

Waiting for them in the shadows was a nondescript black utility van with its engine idling quietly. Marcus slid the side door open, pulling them inside just as the beam of a federal flashlight swept across the far end of the alley.

"Drive," Luca commanded.

The van surged forward into the labyrinth of suburban backstreets, slipping away into the night before the federal agents even realized the house had a lower exit.

Inside the bouncing, dimly lit van, Emily leaned her head against her father’s shoulder, breathing heavily. Her heart was pounding a mile a minute, her hand resting protectively over her bump.

"Dad," she whispered into the quiet hum of the engine. "What happens now? The feds have the house. Vanessa is talking. Your name is back on their radar."

Luca wrapped a strong, protective arm around his daughter’s shoulders, pulling her close. He looked down at the leather briefcase resting between his feet—the briefcase containing her mother’s final truth.

"Now," Luca said softly, a faint, reassuring smile touching the corners of his mouth, "we go home. There is something waiting for you in the master suite that changes everything. Something your mother helped me build a month before she passed away."

Emily frowned, looking up at him through the dim light. "What could possibly be waiting at the mansion, Dad? The whole city is looking for us."

May you like

"Not a weapon, Em," Luca replied, his dark eyes shining with a rare, profound tenderness. "A nursery."
