Chapter 7 - The Knock at the Iron Gates

The morning sun cast pale, golden shards of light across the plush Persian carpets of the Moretti master suite, but inside the room, time seemed to stand completely still. Emily sat in the antique rocking chair her mother had hand-painted, gently running her fingertips over the soft cashmere baby blanket. The air smelled faintly of lavender and old paper—a comforting, grounding scent that chased away the lingering terror of the federal raid on Maple Street. Downstairs, the sprawling estate was a fortress of absolute silence, yet every nerve in the house remained tightly coiled.

Luca Moretti stood by the floor-to-ceiling arched window, his broad back turned to the room as he peered through the lace curtains down at the winding driveway. In his right hand, he held a heavy, encrypted satellite phone, its green indicator light blinking rhythmically in the dim light. The federal agents had tracked their digital footprints as far as the outer highway, but the estate's high-grade electronic dampening system had successfully blinded their trackers. For now, they were safe. But Luca’s hardened instincts told him that the calm was nothing more than the eye of a hurricane.

"Dad," Emily’s voice broke the quiet, soft and hesitant. She looked up from the cradle, her eyes tracing the powerful lines of her father’s shoulders. "What happens when they find us here? Vanessa is in federal custody now. She knows about the ledger, she knows about Maple Street, and she’ll trade everything she has to save herself from prison."

Luca turned slowly, his face etched with a grim, stoic resolve that had kept him alive at the top of the underworld for three decades. He walked over to the rocking chair, knelt down on one knee, and took Emily’s small, trembling hand in his large, calloused palm. His dark eyes, usually cold and calculating toward the world, softened completely as he looked at his daughter and her rounded belly.

"Let her talk," Luca said, his voice a deep, gravelly rumble that carried absolute authority. "The federal prosecutors think that ledger is a weapon they can use to tear down our empire. What they don't understand is that the names inside those pages aren't just my associates—they are the very people who built this city's infrastructure. If the government tries to unseal those files, half the politicians in Washington will fall right down beside us. Vanessa played a dangerous game, but she stepped onto a chessboard she doesn't even know how to read."

"But the baby..." Emily whispered, a tear slipping down her cheek as fear threatened to swallow her whole. "I didn't want my child born into a war zone, Dad. I left four years ago because I couldn't bear the blood, the guns, the constant terror of wondering if you’d come home alive. And now... we're right back in the middle of it."

Luca gently wiped the tear from her cheek with his thumb, his expression tightening with a fierce, protective agony. "You left because you were young, and I failed to protect you from the ugliness of my life, Em. But this time is different. Your mother left us a blueprint. Not just for this room, but for a way out. The men whose names are in that ledger owe me debts that go back twenty years. By sunset today, those debts will be collected, and our path out of this city will be cleared."

Before Emily could reply, a sharp, metallic sound echoed through the silent mansion.

*Clang.*

It wasn't a knock at the front door. It was the heavy, automated security gate at the foot of the cliffside driveway being forced open by hydraulic pressure.

Luca stood up in a single fluid motion, his hand instinctively dropping to the custom-engraved Beretta tucked beneath his tailored vest. Across the room, the secure intercom panel mounted beside the mahogany wardrobe lit up with a harsh, amber warning light.

Marcus’s voice crackled through the speaker, breathless and clipped with urgency. "Boss! We’ve got an uninvited guest at the inner gate. It’s not the feds. It’s a private convoy. Blacked-out Lincolns. No plates."

Luca’s eyes narrowed into dangerous, lethal slits. He tapped the intercom transmitter. "Who is it, Marcus?"

"I don't know, Boss," Marcus replied, the sound of heavy tactical boots echoing in the background as security teams scrambled into position downstairs. "They didn't stop at the checkpoint. They just rammed the secondary gate. And Boss... they’ve got a flag flying on the lead car. The crest of the Chicago syndicate."

Emily gasped, standing up from the rocking chair, her hands flying to her mouth. "Chicago? But Dad, the Chicago syndicate hasn't operated in our territory since the treaty of 2010!"

"Treaties are written in ink, Em," Luca said coldly, his face turning into a mask of pure, unadulterated ice as he walked toward the bedroom door. "And they're usually torn up in blood. Stay here. Lock this door behind me, and do not open it for anyone—not even Marcus—unless you hear me give the passphrase."

"Dad, wait!" Emily cried out, but Luca was already gone, the heavy oak door clicking shut behind him with a final, echoing snap.
