Chapter 10 - The Fall of Chloe Vance

By nine o’clock the following morning, the financial empire the Vance family had spent two years constructing on lies began to collapse like a house built on wet sand.
The offices of Miller & Sterling occupied the top two floors of an imposing limestone building in Nashville’s financial district. Chloe Vance arrived thirty minutes late, disheveled from a seven-hour overnight bus ride from Atlanta, wearing wrinkled clothes she had purchased from a 24-hour pharmacy.
She thought she could slip into her corner cubicle, log into the server, and delete the digital footprints connecting her workstation to Kelly Tran’s forged notary files.
She never made it past the glass double doors of the lobby.
Standing near the reception desk were two senior partners of the firm, Arthur Sterling and Richard Miller, flanked by two armed federal marshals and an investigator from the Tennessee State Board of Accountancy.
“Chloe Vance?” Richard Miller said, his voice flat and devoid of emotion.
Chloe stopped dead in her tracks, clutching her purse against her ribs. “Mr. Miller... I’m so sorry I’m late. I had a family emergency in Georgia—”
“Save your explanations, Ms. Vance,” Arthur Sterling interrupted, stepping aside to reveal two cardboard boxes sitting on the reception counter, filled with the contents of her desk. “Your computer terminal was seized at six o’clock this morning under a federal search warrant issued by the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee.”
Chloe’s knees buckled. “A search warrant? For what?!”
“For interstate wire fraud, identity theft, and unauthorized use of commercial accounting escrow credentials,” Richard Miller said, his face dark with fury. “We have spent the last three hours reviewing your audit logs. You utilized this firm’s proprietary underwriting software to generate fraudulent corporate balance sheets for Apex Ridge Logistics, and you used Kelly Tran’s administrative credentials to notarize forged collateral deeds.”
“No! That wasn't me!” Chloe cried out, her voice shrill and panicked, drawing the attention of dozens of junior associates standing in the glass hallways. “My brother Luke set that up! He forced me to help him! I’m the victim here!”
“You are not a victim, Ms. Vance,” the federal marshal said, stepping forward and unclipping a pair of steel handcuffs from his utility belt. “You are a named co-conspirator under Title 18 of the United States Code. Please turn around and place your hands behind your back.”
“No! You can’t do this to me! I’m up for partner!” Chloe shrieked, thrashing her arms as the marshals grabbed her wrists. “Mr. Sterling! Tell them! I’ve brought millions into this firm!”
“You brought stolen money into this firm,” Arthur Sterling spat, disgust twisting his features. “The ninety-six thousand dollars you deposited into your partnership equity account was embezzled directly from Hannah Ross Design LLC. We have already initiated an immediate asset surrender back to Ms. Ross’s legal representatives, and the State Board has formally revoked your CPA license as of eight-thirty this morning.”
“My license?!” Chloe screamed, tears pouring down her face as the cold steel cuffs clicked tightly around her wrists. “You can’t take my license! It took me five years to pass the exams!”
“You should have thought about that before you forged a deed on an eight-hundred-thousand-dollar penthouse,” the marshal said, turning her toward the elevators.
Dozens of her colleagues pulled out their smartphones, recording every second of Chloe’s humiliating perp walk as she was led down the carpeted hallway in handcuffs, sobbing and wailing, her designer shoes dragging along the floor.
By noon, the video of Chloe Vance being escorted out of Nashville’s most prestigious accounting firm had been uploaded to LinkedIn and TikTok by three different junior staffers, accumulating over fifty thousand views within two hours.
The Vance name was no longer synonymous with southern prestige.

It was synonymous with handcuffs.
