Chapter 9 - The Cornered Rat

It was nearly ten o’clock that night when I finally returned to Maya’s apartment. The adrenaline that had sustained me for eighteen hours had begun to fade, leaving behind a dull, throbbing exhaustion that settled deep into my bones. My burned wrist was screaming under fresh bandages, and my head pounded behind my temples.

Maya was in the kitchen pouring two glasses of Cabernet Sauvignon when a violent, rapid pounding shook her front door.

*BANG. BANG. BANG.*

“Hannah! Open the damn door! I know you’re in there!”

It was Luke.

Maya immediately set the wine bottle down and reached for her phone on the counter. “I’m calling the police.”

“Wait,” I said, holding up a hand. “Let him talk through the door. Keep the deadbolt locked and start recording.”

I walked toward the reinforced steel door, stopping two feet back from the peephole.

Through the glass lens, Luke looked like a ghost of the man I had married. His expensive hair was disheveled, his tie was ripped open at the collar, and his eyes were bloodshot and wild. He slammed his fist against the wood once more.

“Hannah! Open the door! We need to talk! Right now!”

“Say whatever you have to say from the hallway, Luke,” I said, my voice steady through the wood. “The deadbolt stays locked.”

He pressed his forehead against the door, his voice muffled and desperate.

“Hannah, baby... please. You’ve got to listen to me. This whole thing has spiraled out of control. Oscar and Chloe are stuck in Atlanta without a car. My mother is sitting in the kitchen hyperventilating, threatening to take sleeping pills. Marcus Vance called me ten minutes ago—the bank’s compliance division is launching an internal audit tomorrow morning! Do you understand what that means? They’re going to revoke his license!”

“Marcus should have thought about his license before he helped you forge my signature on a two-million-dollar fraud scheme,” I answered.

“I didn't do it to hurt you!” Luke shouted, his voice cracking with panic. “I did it to save the family! Apex Ridge was supposed to be our ticket out of Nashville! We were going to expand into three states! If the freight business succeeded, I was going to pay back every single dollar into your design account before you even noticed it was gone!”

“Before I noticed?” I repeated, bitter amusement rising in my chest. “You stole four hundred and eighteen thousand dollars from my business, Luke. You bought a Porsche while I drove an old crossover. You funded your mother’s luxury lifestyle while treating me like an unpaid cook in her house.”

“My mother is old-fashioned!” Luke plead, his fists thudding against the frame. “She comes from a generation where daughters-in-law respect the matriarch! I couldn't change her, Hannah! I was caught in the middle!”

“You weren't caught in the middle, Luke. You were holding the knife.”

A long, suffocating silence fell over the hallway.

When Luke spoke again, the pathetic, pleading tone was gone. The mask had slipped entirely, replaced by the ugly, venomous monster lurking beneath.

“You think you’re smart, don't you?” he whispered, his mouth pressed right against the crack of the door. “You think because you hired Evelyn Cross you’ve won? Let me tell you something, Hannah. If you take this to the grand jury, I will burn everything down. I will shred every business record. I will testify that you authorized every single transfer. I will claim you gave me the deed as an equity gift. It’ll be your word against mine, my mother’s, Chloe’s, and Oscar’s. Four against one. Who do you think a Tennessee jury is going to believe? An outsider from Memphis, or a family that’s lived in Davidson County for four generations?”

I looked through the peephole at his twisted, sneering face.

“You forgot one thing, Luke.”

“What’s that?” he hissed.

“Kelly Tran,” I said quietly.

Luke froze. Every muscle in his body visibly locked.

“What about Kelly?” he breathed.

“Kelly Tran spent two hours in Evelyn Cross’s office this afternoon,” I said, every word hitting him like a hammer. “She signed a sworn proffer agreement with the District Attorney in exchange for full immunity. She handed over every text message, every WhatsApp thread, and every email where Chloe instructed her to forge my digital notary stamp. She even gave us the audio recording of you offering her ten thousand dollars from the loan proceeds to keep her mouth shut.”

Through the peephole, I watched Luke stumble backward away from the door, his eyes wide with unadulterated terror. His hands dropped to his sides, his mouth hanging slack.

“No...” he gasped. “Chloe said Kelly was loyal...”

“Nobody is loyal when facing ten years in federal prison, Luke,” I said. “Now get out of this hallway before Maya’s building security has you arrested for felony harassment.”

May you like

Luke turned and fled down the carpeted corridor, his footsteps fading rapidly toward the emergency stairwell like a cornered animal running for its life.
