Chapter 8 - The Media Firestorm

The attack began at dawn on Monday.

A prominent online celebrity tabloid published a front-page exposé featuring high-resolution paparazzi photos of Braylen and Dalia walking along the St. Augustine beach with the twins, accompanied by an incendiary headline:

**“BILLIONAIRE FURNITURE MOGUL BRAYLEN MONROE SHACKS UP WITH HOUSEKEEPER AFTER CRUELLY DISCARDING SOCIALITE WIFE.”**

The article featured a tearful, exclusive video interview with Sabrina. Dressed in modest black, her eyes dabbed with tissues, Sabrina spun a masterclass of deceit. She claimed that Braylen had orchestrated an emotional campaign to isolate her, forced her to travel for business while he conducted an affair with the estate cleaner, and pressured her into signing custody agreements under extreme emotional distress.

Within hours, the story went viral across national news feeds.

By noon, news vans with satellite dishes were parked outside the iron gates of the Monroe estate. Camera crews filmed every car entering and exiting. Social media was flooded with vicious debates, with thousands of anonymous commentators painting Dalia as a gold-digging home-wrecker and Braylen as a hypocritical corporate predator.

Inside the corporate headquarters of Monroe Design Group, panic ensued. The board of directors called an emergency closed-door meeting for Wednesday morning, threatening to demand Braylen’s resignation as CEO if the scandal wasn't neutralized immediately. Major luxury department store chains in New York and Chicago paused their holiday wholesale orders pending the resolution of the public relations disaster.

Braylen spent the entire day on encrypted conference calls, his voice raw, refusing to issue a public apology or step down.

“I will not apologize for protecting my children from an abusive, neglectful mother!” Braylen roared into his headset in his home study. “And I will not fire an innocent woman to appease cowardice on the board!”

Upstairs in the private living quarters, the atmosphere was suffocating. The blinds were drawn shut to prevent paparazzi with telephoto lenses from photographing the twins. Tara and Mabel sat on the rug, coloring in silence, sensing the dark storm outside the walls.

Dalia sat on the edge of her bed in the guest suite. On the television screen, a panel of commentators on an entertainment network was dissecting her life.

*“...sources say Rosewood was drowning in medical debts before securing the position in the Monroe household...”*

*“...classic case of an opportunistic domestic worker targeting a vulnerable executive...”*

Dalia switched the television off. The silence that rushed in was deafening.

She walked over to the mirror. Her face was pale, her eyes hollow. She wasn't angry for herself; she had endured poverty, gossip, and hardship before. But she looked at the photos on the dresser—pictures Mabel and Tara had drawn for her, covered in glitter and scribbled hearts reading *“To Miss Dalia, Our Best Friend.”*

She knew what she had to do. Sabrina’s legal argument relied entirely on the narrative of an ongoing “inappropriate domestic scandal.” If Dalia was gone, the tabloid narrative would lose its fuel. The board would calm down, the focus would shift strictly to Sabrina’s signed legal abandonments, and Braylen’s empire would be saved.

That night, after the house fell into absolute quiet, Dalia waited until the grandfather clock in the foyer chimed two in the morning.

Moving like a ghost, she packed her single canvas suitcase with the modest clothes she had arrived with six months earlier. She left the midnight-blue silk gown hanging in the closet. She left every piece of jewelry Braylen had bought her on the vanity table.

She crept down the darkened stairs, tiptoeing into the twins’ bedroom. Tara and Mabel were sleeping soundly, their breathing soft and rhythmic. Dalia knelt between their beds, tears pouring down her cheeks like rain. She pressed a feather-light kiss to Tara’s cheek, then Mabel’s.

“Be brave, my sweet angels,” she whispered, her throat closing with agony. “God will watch over you. Your daddy loves you more than life itself.”

She walked down to the kitchen, set her house keys on the granite counter, and placed a single handwritten envelope beside them.

Then, slipping out through the side laundry door into the cool, dark night, Dalia walked past the sleeping security guard, through the pedestrian garden gate, and vanished into the shadows of St. Augustine.
