Chapter 9 - Choosing Love Over Pride

At six in the morning, Braylen walked downstairs, eager to see Dalia before the day’s corporate battles began.

The kitchen was dark. There was no smell of brewing coffee, no gentle hum of morning preparation. The eerie stillness sent an immediate, icy shock through his veins.

Then he saw the counter.

Sitting on the polished stone were Dalia’s house keys, resting on top of a sealed white envelope.

Braylen’s heart violently seized. He grabbed the envelope, ripping it open with shaking hands.

*Dearest Braylen,*

*Please forgive me for leaving like a coward in the night. If I had looked into your eyes or hugged the girls one last time, I would have never found the strength to walk out the door.*

*I heard what your lawyer said. I saw the news vans outside. I know what the board of directors is threatening to do to you. Sabrina wants to destroy you because of me. As long as I am here, she has a weapon to use against you, your company, and the girls.*

*You gave me my dignity back when the world treated me like invisible dirt. You showed me that real love is gentle, protective, and true. I love you too much, Braylen, to let my presence cost you the empire you built for your daughters.*

*Tell Tara and Mabel that Miss Dalia loves them with all her heart, and that I will pray for them every single day. Take care of yourself, my brave man. You are the greatest father in the world.*

*Forever yours,*

*Dalia*

“No,” Braylen gasped, the letter crumpling in his fist. “No, no, no!”

He ran up the stairs two at a time, throwing open the guest suite door. The closet was bare. The vanity held only the jewelry he had given her, untouched.

Braylen stood in the center of the empty room, his chest heaving, a terrifying realization crashing down upon him. He had spent his entire life building furniture, accumulating wealth, defending his pride, and protecting his corporate standing. But in this moment, looking at the empty room where the woman he loved had slept, he realized that without Dalia, all of it—the millions, the mansions, the board seats—was completely, utterly worthless.

At eight o’clock, Braylen received a phone call from his head of corporate security.

“Mr. Monroe, we pulled the local bus terminal surveillance footage. Miss Rosewood bought a one-way bus ticket to Savannah, Georgia. Her bus left forty-five minutes ago, but it has a scheduled ninety-minute layover at the coastal interchange station outside Jacksonville.”

“Send a car to the terminal immediately!” Braylen ordered, his voice roaring through the speaker. “And call my public relations team. Tell them to book the main auditorium at the Casa Monica Hotel for an emergency national press conference at eleven o’clock. Every media network with a camera in this state better be in that room!”

Braylen didn't wait for a chauffeur. He jumped into his car and sped toward the interstate, the speedometer needle pushing past eighty as he raced north toward the Jacksonville terminal.

Forty minutes later, Braylen burst through the double doors of the weathered coastal transit station. The terminal was crowded with weary travelers, flickering neon signs, and rows of plastic chairs.

Sitting in the far corner, near a clouded window overlooking the bus bays, was Dalia. She sat with her hands folded in her lap, her canvas bag resting by her feet, staring blankly ahead, tears silently running down her cheeks.

“Dalia!”

She gasped, lifting her head.

Braylen strode across the linoleum floor, completely indifferent to the stares of the travelers around them. He stopped in front of her, his suit rumpled, his hair disheveled from the wind, his eyes burning with an intensity she had never seen before.

“Braylen?” she breathed, standing up in shock. “How... how did you find me? You shouldn't be here! The board meeting—”

Before she could finish, Braylen grabbed her by the shoulders and pulled her into his arms, crushing his mouth against hers in a fierce, desperate kiss.

Dalia stiffened for a fraction of a second before melting against him, her bag dropping to the floor, her fingers tangling into his coat as she sobbed into the kiss.

When he finally pulled back, his hands were trembling against her cheeks.

“You idiot,” Braylen choked out, a ragged laugh escaping his throat despite the tears in his eyes. “You magnificent, stubborn idiot. Did you really think I cared about a board of directors? Did you think I cared about a few cancelled furniture contracts?”

“Braylen, your reputation—”

“My reputation means nothing without you!” he shouted, not caring who heard him. “I spent twenty years building an empire, Dalia, and it was nothing but cold stone and empty wood until you walked into that kitchen. You are my family. You are the woman I love. I am not letting you sacrifice yourself for my pride!”

“What about Sabrina?” she wept. “What about the media?”

Braylen wiped her tears with his thumbs, a fierce, triumphant smile spreading across his face. “We are going to handle Sabrina right now. Together.”

At eleven o’clock, the grand ballroom of the Casa Monica Hotel was packed to capacity with over fifty journalists, television cameras, and flashbulbs. Sabrina sat in the front row, flanked by an opportunistic media attorney, wearing a triumphant smirk, convinced that Braylen had called the conference to announce his resignation and offer her a settlement.

The doors opened, and Braylen walked onto the stage.

The room erupted into flashes. But the gasps began when the crowd saw who was walking beside him: Dalia Rosewood, holding Braylen’s hand tightly, her head held high with quiet majesty.

Braylen stepped up to the podium, adjusting the microphones. The room fell into absolute silence.

“Good morning,” Braylen began, his voice deep, calm, and resonant. “Over the past week, many of you have run stories speculating about my personal life, my divorce, and the woman standing beside me.”

He pointed a remote control at the massive projector screen behind him.

“Before you write another word, you need to see the truth.”

A document illuminated the screen. It was Sabrina’s signed custody relinquishment, accompanied by stamped bank wire transfers and flight manifests.

“Three months ago, my former wife, Sabrina, voluntarily surrendered full physical and legal custody of our twin daughters in exchange for a substantial monetary settlement,” Braylen stated clearly. “The documents on that screen show that on the very day she left our children, she boarded a private jet to São Paulo with her lover, Pierre Laurent. These records show that she transferred three hundred thousand dollars of marital funds to his offshore accounts before he abandoned her in Switzerland.”

Sabrina’s face turned from smug to pure, ash-grey horror. Her attorney leaned back in his chair, whispering furiously to her, frantically shaking his head.

Braylen turned his gaze directly toward the cameras, speaking with unwavering conviction.

“When my wife abandoned our six-year-old daughters, I was lost. My children were devastated. The woman who saved my family was not a corporate consultant, nor was she a socialite. It was Dalia Rosewood.”

Braylen stepped away from the podium and reached out, pulling Dalia gently to his side in front of the entire national press corps.

“Dalia did not break up a marriage; she rebuilt a family from the ruins left by a woman who chose luxury over her own flesh and blood. Dalia taught my daughters how to laugh again. She gave this house a soul. And today, I want the world to know that I love Dalia Rosewood with every fiber of my being. I will not apologize for loving her. And I will not step down from my company, because real leadership means standing up for the people who matter most.”

The ballroom erupted into deafening applause and flashing cameras. Reporters shouted questions, but Braylen ignored them all.

Sabrina stood up, humiliated and ruined, grabbing her purse and fleeing out the side exit under the hostile glares of the crowd.

Braylen looked down at Dalia. In front of fifty cameras and the entire nation, he leaned down and kissed her gently, sealing his promise to the world.
