Chapter 6 - The Group Chat Explodes

The pounding on the door continued for three minutes. Ryan shouted my name, pleaded, and rattled the brass hardware until the porch light automatically clicked off, plunging the entryway into darkness.

Finally, I heard his boots retreat down the wooden steps. His car engine roared to life, and the sweep of headlights faded down our street.

I sank onto the bottom step of our staircase, pulling my knees up to my chest. My whole body was trembling. I had never locked my husband out of our home. I had never defied the Miller family dynamic in such a direct, irrevocable way. For years, I had been the accommodating one, the quiet daughter-in-law who swallowed the digs about my family's socioeconomic background, who smiled when Judith rearranged the furniture in our living room without asking, who nodded when Ryan said, *“That’s just how Mom is.”*

My phone chimed on the console table beside me.

It was the family group chat. The one Judith had created four years ago labeled *Miller Family Inner Circle*.

It was usually reserved for Judith’s marching orders: color palettes for family portraits, arrival times for Sunday dinners, and links to expensive items on her personal wish list.

Tonight, it was burning down.

**Judith:** *Your father has completely lost his mind. I am sitting in a filthy hotel room off the highway on CHRISTMAS EVE. After forty years of sacrifice. After everything I have given to this family. He has taken the side of a woman who came from nothing and has systematically turned this family against me.*

A minute passed. No one responded.

**Judith:** *Ryan, where are you? You need to come get me right now. This room smells like smoke. Mark, Paige, I expect you to call your father and tell him this insanity ends tonight. We have twenty-two people coming for brunch at 9:00 AM. Who is going to bake the strata? Who is going to set the crystal?*

My fingers hovered over the glass. I didn't type a single word. I simply watched the typing bubbles appear and disappear.

Then, Scott chimed in. Scott was twenty-six, the youngest, who had always kept his head down and lived three hours away in Columbus just to avoid the weekly family drama.

**Scott:** *Mom, you hit Hannah.*

**Judith:** *I tapped her! She was screaming in my face! She lunged at me over a spilled dish!*

**Scott:** *I was sitting three feet away, Mom. Hannah didn’t lunge. She stood in front of Ellie because you grabbed a three-year-old by the wrist like an animal. You hit her with an open hand. We all saw it. Mark saw it. Paige saw it. Stop lying.*

**Judith:** *How DARE you speak to your mother like that! After the college tuition I paid! After the car I bought you!*

**Scott:** *Dad paid for the tuition. Dad paid for the car. You don’t get to buy our silence anymore. I’m packing my things from the guest room right now. My girlfriend and I are driving back to Columbus tonight. Have fun at the Marriott.*

**Judith:** *Paige! Talk to your brother!*

Another pause. The little grey bubbles danced for nearly two minutes.

**Paige:** *Mom, Scott is right. What you did was horrific. Ellie was sobbing so hard she couldn't breathe. Dad isn't crazy. He's just finally done. Mark and I are packing our kids up and going home to Dayton. We aren't coming to brunch tomorrow.*

**Judith:** *YOU WOULD RUIN CHRISTMAS FOR YOUR CHILDREN?!*

**Paige:** *You ruined Christmas when you struck my sister-in-law.*

**Judith:** *Ryan! Where are you?! Answer your phone! Your siblings have abandoned me!*

I watched the screen, waiting to see what Ryan would say. Would he defend me? Would he stand with his brother and sister?

**Ryan:** *Mom, I’m pulling into the Marriott parking lot right now. I’m coming up to your room.*

I stared at Ryan's text.

He didn't defend me. He didn't tell her she was wrong. He had left my locked front door and driven straight to the woman who had bruised my jaw.

A notification popped up at the top of my screen.

*Frank Miller has removed Judith Miller from the group.*
