Chapter 4 - The Swapped Vial

Brianna’s apartment smelled of burnt toast and stale peppermint tea. Packing boxes were stacked halfway to the ceiling in the living room, taped shut and labeled with destination tags for Seattle.
She walked over to the bay window, carefully peeling back the edge of the vertical blinds to peer down into the street below. Satisfied that no black sedans had followed me, she let the plastic blind drop and turned to face me, wrapping her arms tightly around her stomach.
"You shouldn't have come here," she said, her voice shaking. "Mark is completely unhinged. If he realizes the cake board was tampered with, he's going to know I went rogue."
"Sit down, Brianna," I said gently, pointing toward the sofa. "Sit down before you pass out."
She sank onto the edge of the couch, burying her face in her hands. A single, ragged sob tore from her throat.
"I'm going to ask you one question," I said, sitting on the armchair across from her. "And I need the absolute, unvarnished truth. Whose baby is my daughter carrying?"
Brianna lowered her hands, her eyes rimmed with raw, crimson veins. "It’s Lauren’s baby. Biologically, genetically... it’s Lauren and Mark’s. I swear to God on my life, Mrs. Vance, I didn't tamper with her embryo."
A wave of intense relief broke over me, though my guard remained firmly up. "Then what did Mark pay you to do at the clinic?"
Brianna drew a trembling breath. "I was Lauren and Mark's primary IVF coordinator for their third cycle last year. Mark started showing up at my office during off-hours, bringing me coffee, asking detailed questions about the genetic screening processes. At first, I thought he was just an attentive, stressed husband. Then... he started flirting. Taking me to expensive dinners. Telling me his marriage was dead, that Lauren was obsessed with pregnancy to the point of driving him away."
She looked down at her lap, shame burning in her cheeks. "I was stupid. I was lonely, and he was charming. We started an affair four months ago. But then, about eight weeks into Lauren’s pregnancy, Dr. Sterling’s lab ran the non-invasive prenatal test—the NIPT screen. It checks for chromosomal anomalies and reveals the sex."
"And the screen came back male," I said.
Brianna nodded. "Lauren’s baby is a healthy boy. Normal XY chromosomes. When Mark found out, he didn't just look disappointed—he had a full psychotic break right in my car. He started screaming, slamming his fists into the steering wheel, talking about debts and his grandfather’s estate. That was the night he told me about the eight million dollars."
"What did he ask you to do?"
"He told me that I was his 'real future,'" Brianna cried, tears spilling over her cheeks. "He said that if I helped him secure the inheritance, we would take the money, move to the Cayman Islands, and start over. And then... two weeks later, I found out I was pregnant with his child."
My breath caught in my throat. I stared at the gentle swell of her belly. "Your baby is Mark’s?"
"Yes," Brianna whispered. "And two weeks ago, I ran my own private scan at the clinic. Mine is a girl. A daughter."
The sheer depravity of what was happening began to crystallize in my mind, each realization more horrifying than the last.
"He wanted to swap them," I stated, the words tasting like ash in my mouth.
Brianna covered her mouth, a muffled wail escaping her throat. "He came to my apartment with a notary public and legal adoption waivers. He wanted me to agree to a covert home delivery or an off-the-books clinic in Tijuana. His plan was to wait until Lauren was thirty-five weeks along, induce labor early, and claim her baby didn't survive the birth. Then, he was going to present my baby girl as Lauren's surviving twin or claim we adopted through an expedited private surrogate to fulfill the trust’s conditions before the six-month deadline."
"He was going to kill my daughter's baby?" I roared, rising to my feet, the fury burning through every nerve ending in my body.
"No! No, he said he was going to put the boy up for closed, private adoption in another state!" Brianna screamed back, holding up her hands in surrender. "He told me the boy would go to a wealthy family in Arizona who couldn't have children! But last night... last night I found a folder in his glove box when he left me in his car outside the bakery."
Brianna scrambled off the couch, ran to a kitchen cabinet, and pulled out a manila folder stuffed with photocopied documents. She shoved them into my hands.
"Look at the dates," she urged, her voice trembling with sheer terror. "Look at what he bought online."
I flipped open the folder. Inside were printouts of receipts from an illicit online compounding pharmacy operating out of Eastern Europe.
Item description: *Mifepristone and synthetic prostaglandin analogs.*
Medications used for chemical terminations and labor induction.
Beneath the receipts was a printed shipping confirmation. The package had been delivered to Mark’s private PO box three days ago.
And stapled to the back of the invoice was a handwritten checklist in Mark's distinct, rigid penmanship:
*1. Swap bakery envelope (Done)*
*2. Keep Lauren sedated/calm*
*3. Daily prenatal vitamin switch (Start Sunday night)*
*4. Hospital admittance: spontaneous late-term loss*
*5. Transfer Brianna to private facility*
My vision blurred with pure adrenaline.
"The daily prenatal vitamin switch," I whispered, the words echoing in the silent apartment like a death sentence. "He’s poisoning her."
Brianna grabbed my arm, her eyes wild with remorse. "He’s been crushing the pills into her nighttime prenatal supplements, Mrs. Vance! He told me he was only going to give her mild sedatives to keep her blood pressure down, but when I saw those receipts for prostaglandin, I knew he was trying to force a late-term miscarriage! He wants Lauren's boy gone so there are no legal disputes over the inheritance!"
I pulled out my phone and dialed Lauren's number.
*Ring.*
*Ring.*
*Ring.*
*“Hi, you’ve reached Lauren. Please leave a message after the tone—”*
I hung up and dialed again. Straight to voicemail.
I checked the time on my dashboard: 5:45 PM.
Mark had told me Lauren was going to lie down to rest, and he was giving her a cup of hot chamomile tea before he started his 'paperwork.'
"If anything happens to my daughter," I said, staring Brianna dead in the eyes, "you will spend the rest of your life in an orange jumpsuit as an accessory to attempted murder. Get in your car, drive straight to the precinct on 4th Street, and ask for Detective Miller. Tell him everything."
I didn't wait for her answer. I threw open the apartment door, sprinted down the hallway, and took the stairs three at a time.
