Chapter 9 - The Final Severance

Detective Miller pulled a ruggedized satellite phone from his tactical vest, dialed a direct patch to the Indiana State Police hostage negotiation unit, and set the heavy device onto the rolling bedside table.

He tapped the speaker icon.

A sharp burst of static crackled through the speaker, followed by the heavy, ragged sound of a man panting for breath in an enclosed, echoing space.

"Mark?" Detective Miller spoke into the receiver. "I have Lauren on the line. She’s listening."

There was a long, suffocating silence.

Then came Mark’s voice. It wasn't the polished, arrogant voice of the suburban husband, nor was it the venomous snarl from the kitchen. It was raw, cracked, wet with blood and panic.

"Lauren?" he gasped out. "Lauren, baby... are you there? Please tell me you’re there."

Lauren leaned forward over the table, her eyes fixed on the black plastic phone. She didn't flinch. She didn't cry.

"I'm here, Mark."

"Oh, thank God," Mark sobbed, a pathetic, desperate sound that echoed through the sterile room. "Lauren, you have to help me. You have to tell these cops that this was a domestic dispute! Tell them your mother attacked me first! Tell them the tea was just a misunderstanding! If you recant your statement, my lawyer can get the charges reduced to reckless conduct! I can post bail! We can fix this, baby!"

Lauren listened to him babble, her face entirely impassive. "Fix this, Mark? How do we fix this?"

"I love you, Lauren!" Mark screamed over the line, the sound of rain hammering against the corrugated metal roof of the storage unit clearly audible. "Everything I did, I did for us! I did it so we would never have to worry about money again! We were going to be rich, Lauren! We were going to have the life we deserved!"

"You didn't do it for us, Mark," Lauren said, her voice dropping into a register of icy, devastating clarity. "You did it for yourself. Because you are a weak, cowardly gambler who would rather murder his own child than admit he was a failure."

A dead silence fell over the phone.

"What did you say?" Mark whispered, the rage creeping back into his tone like grease floating on water.

"I saw the ultrasound yesterday, Mark," Lauren continued, her voice gaining strength, echoing off the hospital walls. "His name is Leo. His heart is beating at one hundred and forty-eight beats per minute. He has ten fingers, ten toes, and his father’s eyes... but he will never, ever know your name."

"You shut your mouth!" Mark roared, the metal walls of the unit rattling as he kicked something over. "You owe me everything, Lauren! Without me, you’re an empty vessel who couldn't even keep a fertilized egg alive! You're nothing without me!"

"I am a mother, Mark," Lauren replied, her tone completely calm, completely detached from his venom. "And you are just a cornered rat hiding in a storage locker in Gary, Indiana."

"I have eight million dollars coming to me!" Mark shrieked, completely detached from reality. "The trust is mine!"

"The trust belongs to Leo," Lauren said, delivering the final, fatal blow. "Arthur’s board convened yesterday. You were disinherited. The entire eight million dollars is being placed into an irrevocable trust for our son. You gave him everything, Mark. And you get nothing."

A choked, animalistic howl of pure, unadulterated fury ripped from Mark’s throat—the sound of a man watching his entire universe crumble into fine gray ash.

"Lauren, no! Lauren, please—!"

Lauren reached out with her index finger and tapped the red button on the screen.

The line disconnected.

Silence rushed back into the hospital room, thick and clean.

Lauren took a slow, deep breath, expanding her lungs, and let it out. She stood beside the bed, tall and unbroken, looking out the large double windows at the sun breaking through the autumn clouds over the city skyline.

Detective Miller retrieved the satellite phone, giving Lauren a look of profound, solemn respect. "Tactical team is moving in now, Mrs. Vance. It will be over in five minutes."

Ten minutes later, Miller’s tactical radio chirped twice.

*“Command to Miller. Suspect surrendered without firing a shot. Weapon recovered. Suspect is in custody and en route to Lake County Jail for processing.”*

Miller pocketed the radio, touched the brim of his hat, and smiled gently. "Sleep well tonight, Lauren. He will never knock on your door again."
