Chapter 2 - The Name on the Check

The silence that blanketed the Plaza ballroom was so suffocating you could hear the air conditioning hum against the crystal chandeliers.
Luke Vance stayed on one knee, clutching his fractured wrist, his chest heaving. His slicked-back hair had fallen into his eyes, his designer tuxedo rumpled. His brain visibly short-circuited as he tried to process Arthur Sterling’s words.
*Daughter.*
“M-Mr. Sterling...” Luke wheezed, spit flying from his lips. “You... you must be mistaken. This is Samantha. Samantha Miller. She’s an orphan. A nobody from upstate. She worked at a public library when I met her!”
Arthur didn’t even glance down at him. Two of his private security operatives flanked Luke instantly, the clicks of their holsters snapping open echoing through the stillness. The entire front row of reporters retreated three steps, phones raised, live streams broadcasting directly to every major news outlet in the country.
Arthur stepped carefully over the carpet of broken glass, ignoring the ruin of champagne and blood, and knelt right in front of me.
The ruthless titan of global commerce—a man who had brought foreign governments to their knees—gently reached out with a trembling, weathered hand and wiped the blood from the corner of my mouth with his silk pocket square.
“Sammy,” he whispered, his voice cracking with an agony he had buried for twenty years. “My little girl. I told you three years ago. I told you pride wasn't worth hiding in the dirt for an insect.”
Tears burned the backs of my eyes, but I swallowed them down. I didn't want Luke to see me cry. I didn't want Khloe to think she had won an ounce of my grief.
“I had to know, Dad,” I said quietly, my voice ringing clear across the ballroom. “I had to know if he loved me for who I was, or what I had.”
“And now you know,” Arthur said. He stood, his posture straightening into that of an ancient king presiding over an execution. He reached down and took both my hands, lifting me off the glass.
I stood tall. My white gown was stained crimson and ruined, my bare shoulders bruised where Luke had driven me into the table, but I held my chin up. For three years, I had shrunk myself to make Luke Vance feel tall.
No more.
Khloe took a panicked step backward, clinging to Barbara’s arm. “Luke... what is happening? Who is this old man?”
“Shut up, you stupid girl!” Barbara hissed under her breath, her face the color of wet chalk. Barbara had clawed her way into high society through three divorces. She knew the Sterling family crest. She knew Arthur Sterling owned seventy percent of the ports that VanceTech’s hardware shipped through.
“Arthur... please,” Luke begged, struggling to stand. His voice cracked with genuine terror. “She never told me! If I had known she was your daughter—if she had just said something—I would have treated her like a queen!”
“That is your greatest crime, boy,” Arthur growled, turning his hawk-like gaze down upon him. “A man who only respects power is a beast who deserves neither power nor respect. You took thirty million dollars from an anonymous offshore trust to save your pathetic company three years ago. Did you think that was charity?”
Luke froze. His jaw dropped. “That... that was an angel investor from Geneva...”
“That was my daughter’s personal trust fund,” Arthur said coldly. “The only reason VanceTech didn't choke to death in an incubator was because Samantha begged me on her knees to let you have it. She signed personal guarantees. She gave you her life.”
Arthur glanced toward the ballroom’s perimeter. His chief of security stepped forward, presenting a sleek leather briefcase.
“Every single credit facility tied to VanceTech is canceled as of sixty seconds ago,” Arthur announced, loud enough for every reporter’s microphone to catch. “Every supplier, every shipping container, every government contract pending with Sterling Logistics. Voided.”
“No!” Luke screamed, lunging forward. A security guard planted a heavy boot squarely into Luke’s sternum, sending him crashing into the shattered glass he had just forced me onto.
“Dad,” I said softly, resting my hand on my father’s arm.
Arthur paused, looking at me. “Do you want him erased, Samantha?”
I looked down at Luke Vance, writhing in the debris, clutching his broken wrist, covered in the cheap red wine his mistress had poured on me. Khloe was already slowly backing away toward the fire exit, trying to disappear into the crowd.
“No,” I said, my voice ice. “Erasing him is too quick. I gave him everything he has. I’m going to be the one who takes it all back.”
Arthur’s lips curved into a razor-thin, proud smile. “Spoken like a Sterling.”
He offered me his arm. I took it, leaving my ruined silver heels on the floor, walking barefoot alongside my father past the frozen elite of Manhattan.

Behind us, Luke’s screams of denial echoed through the Plaza, drowned out only by the frantic clicking of a hundred cameras recording his total ruin.
