Chapter 8 - The Press Conference

The Grand Ballroom of the New York Marriott Marquis was packed beyond legal capacity.

Over four hundred journalists from international financial networks, gossip tabloids, and investigative publications sat shoulder-to-shoulder under the glare of industrial broadcast lights.

The banner behind the stage read: **STERLING INNOVATIONS: THE FUTURE OF TECH GOVERNANCE.**

At precisely 2:00 PM, I walked onto the stage alone.

No armed guards at my side. No father holding my hand. Just me, dressed in an immaculate white trouser suit, holding a simple black leather portfolio.

The camera shutters clicked in a deafening, continuous wave.

I stepped up to the podium, adjusted the microphone, and waited for the room to quiet down.

“Good afternoon,” I began, my voice carrying clear, resonant authority. “For the past three years, many of you have known me simply as Samantha Vance—the quiet, unseen spouse of an emerging tech founder. Some of you called me plain. Some of you questioned why a rising tech star would marry someone who stayed in the background.”

I looked directly into the lens of the center CNN camera.

“I stayed in the background because I believed that true innovation requires sacrifice, not spectacle. I believed that love meant lifting someone else up, even when it meant erasing yourself.”

I opened the portfolio.

“Today, I am officially rebranding VanceTech to Sterling-Vance Innovations. Luke Vance has been permanently removed from all executive and operational roles. Furthermore, forensic audits conducted over the past forty-eight hours have revealed sixteen million dollars in unauthorized personal expenditures, embezzled through dummy shell corporations in the British Virgin Islands.”

A collective gasp swept through the press corps.

Reporters frantically typed on their laptops.

“All evidence has been handed over to the Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission,” I continued smoothly. “The Vance family’s personal assets have been liquidated to fully repay the employees’ pension fund, which Mr. Vance had illegally leveraged to secure his private lifestyle.”

A senior reporter from the *Wall Street Journal* stood up, raising his hand. “Ms. Sterling! What happens to the hundreds of engineers and staff who feared the company would collapse after Mr. Vance’s departure?”

I smiled—a real, bright, authentic smile that illuminated my entire face.

“Their jobs are guaranteed. In fact, every engineer and support worker at the company will receive a twenty percent salary increase and direct equity shares beginning Monday morning. The era of one man claiming credit for the sweat of hundreds of workers is over.”

The room erupted into applause.

Behind the curtain, my father stood watching with his arms crossed, a broad grin splitting his weathered face. Marcus Cole stood beside him, nodding in silent approval.

For three years, Luke Vance had tried to make me feel small.

In less than a week, I had shown the world how colossal I truly was.
