Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

Chaos erupted in the courthouse lobby.

"You can't do this!" Miles Carver shouted, taking a step backward as two bailiffs converged on him. "On what grounds? This is a civil custody matter! I am a pillar of this community!"

"Shut your mouth, Miles," Judge Ralston snarled, stepping down the stairs into the center of the room. He turned to Daniel Whitaker, who was kneeling on the floor, weeping as he finally held his three children in his arms.

"Dad," Caleb sobbed into Daniel's shoulder. "Grandpa is hurt. Bad. In the barn."

Daniel’s blood ran cold. He pulled back, holding Sophie’s shoulders. "Sophie, what happened? Where is your grandfather?"

Sophie swallowed hard, the last of her adrenaline fading, leaving her shaking uncontrollably. "Miles came to the farmhouse last night. He wanted papers. Grandpa said no. They fought... Grandpa hit the stove. He couldn't get up. Mom... Mom said they shouldn't call an ambulance because it would ruin the custody case."

Daniel looked up across the lobby. Lauren was standing frozen, her face drained of all color, handcuffs clicking onto Miles’s wrists a few feet away.

"Lauren," Daniel whispered, rising to his feet, holding Owen in his arms while Sophie and Caleb clung to his jacket. "You left them there? With Walter dying on the floor?"

"I—I panicked, Daniel," Lauren stammered, tears streaming down her face as a female deputy grabbed her arm. "Miles said... Miles said if we called for help, we'd both be implicated in the cover-up. He promised an ambulance was coming later!"

"You lied," Sophie said, her voice small, cutting through the excuses like a razor. "You watched him fall, and you looked at your watch."

A murmur of disgust rippled through the courtroom spectators. Even the county prosecutor, who had previously enjoyed a cozy relationship with Miles Carver, looked away in shame.

Within ten minutes, state troopers dispatched by Judge Ralston’s direct order were speeding toward the Hargrove farmhouse with paramedics following close behind. Daniel refused to leave his children's side, wrapping them in his heavy work jacket as county medics checked them over in the judge's chambers.

The house of cards built by Carver Diagnostics was tumbling down, and the foundation had been cracked by a twelve-year-old girl who refused to let her grandfather's truth die in the dark.
