Chapter 5 - The Cracking Facade

In Holding Cell B of the Ashford County Detention Center, Miles Carver paced like a caged animal in his tailored suit. His arrogance had entirely evaporated, replaced by a desperate calculation of prison sentences.

Across the metal table sat his defense attorney, Arthur Pendelton, who looked distinctly unenthusiastic about his client's prospects.

"Miles, cut the corporate speak," Pendelton sighed, rubbing his temples. "The state police recovered the unencrypted backup server from your secondary facility in Omaha. They have the audit logs. They have the financial ledger showing wire transfers from Lauren Hargrove’s father’s estate—wait, no, let me rephrase that. They have proof you blackmailed Lauren into signing false witness affidavits by threatening to expose her gambling debts."

Miles stopped pacing, his eyes narrowing. "Lauren won't talk. She's just as implicated as I am. If she goes down for conspiracy, she loses her kids forever anyway."

"Lauren is already talking, Miles," a calm voice interrupted from the doorway.

Agent Sarah Vance walked into the visitation room, holding a signed confession form. "Your girlfriend realized about ten minutes ago that you threw her under the bus. She gave us the encryption keys to your offshore accounts in the Caymans. Game over, Mr. Carver."

Meanwhile, down the hall in a quiet intake room, Lauren Whitaker sat alone with her hands cuffed loosely to a bolted table. Her eyes were red and swollen. She had finally confessed to everything: how Miles had approached her six months ago, manipulated her insecurities about Daniel's modest railroad income, convinced her to help manufacture the "pill discovery" in Daniel's truck, and promised her financial freedom once Daniel was stripped of parental rights.

She had traded her family for a lie. And now, sitting in the silence of her detention cell, she realized the devastating magnitude of what she had done.

The door opened softly, and her lawyer stepped in. "Lauren, your husband has agreed to allow a supervised family counselor visit before the emergency custody hearing tomorrow morning. But don't expect forgiveness."

Lauren buried her face in her hands and wept.
