Chapter 10 - The Unshakable Light

Five years later.
The living room of our new home was quiet except for the crackle of a warm fire in the brick fireplace and the soft hum of our television screen.
It was Christmas Eve once again.
The holiday season no longer carried the sting of painful memories. Instead, it was a time of warmth, gratitude, and peace.
On the television screen, a family-friendly holiday movie special was playing. But this wasn't a home video shot on a shaky phone in a tense living room.
It was a full-length independent feature film—a spiritual successor to The Spark Keeper, starring a twelve-year-old Anna Hayes as the lead actress in a heartwarming winter tale that had been picked up for a theatrical holiday release.
As the opening credits rolled across the screen, displaying her name in bold, elegant letters right at the top—STARRING ANNA HAYES—she walked into the living room holding two mugs of hot cocoa topped with whipped cream and peppermint sprinkles.
She was taller now, graceful and poised, but she still wore her hair with that same vibrant, joyful energy.
She handed me a mug, sat down on the rug right in front of the sofa, and looked up at the screen with a quiet, grounded smile.
There were no empty chairs in our home. There were no secret votes, no cruel exclusions, and no toxic relatives trying to dim her spirit.
There was only a mother and daughter who had stood their ground, faced the worst of human pettiness, and built a world where love was unconditional and light was permanent.
I set my mug down on the coffee table, wrapped my arms around her shoulders, and kissed the top of her head.
“Merry Christmas, my star,” I whispered.
Anna leaned back against my knees, sipping her cocoa while the glowing screen illuminated her happy face.

“Merry Christmas, Mommy,” she smiled. “We made it.”
Yes, we had made it. Through the cold, through the dark, and straight into the light where we belonged, never to be edited out again.
