Chapter 12 - The Collapse of Olivia’s Empire

The trial didn’t take long to materialize. When federal prosecutors smell money, corporate fraud, and high-society infidelity, they move with terrifying speed.
By August, two months after Maya’s ruined birthday party, Olivia Sterling’s life had completely unraveled on the front pages of the local press.
Her upscale PR boutique shut down overnight after every corporate client terminated their contracts. Her socialite friends—the very women who had laughed at her cruel jokes and sipped wine on my patio—erased her from their social feeds and refused to return her calls.
Anthony moved with surgical precision.
He didn't just file for divorce; he filed an emergency civil suit for fraud, breach of fiduciary duty, and conversion. He froze every personal asset Olivia possessed. He canceled her platinum credit cards, took back the leased European sports cars, and evicted her mother from the luxury condo Anthony had graciously allowed her to occupy for five years.
Olivia was forced to move into a dingy, one-bedroom apartment on the outskirts of the county, living off court-monitored weekly stipends while awaiting trial.
One afternoon, as I was loading groceries into my car outside the local supermarket, I heard a sharp, furious voice behind me.
“You look very proud of yourself, don’t you?”
I turned around.
It was Olivia.
She looked terrifying. The flawless blowout was gone; her hair was pulled back in a messy, greasy bun. She wore cheap leggings, an oversized trench coat, and dark sunglasses, though the sky was completely overcast. Her skin was sallow, devoid of the expensive foundation and spa treatments she had built her life around.
I didn't back down. I stood tall beside my grocery cart. “Step away from me, Olivia. You have an active restraining order against approaching me or Maya.”
She let out a dry, manic laugh. “A restraining order? You destroyed my life, Lauren! You poisoned Anthony against me! You made my own brother turn state's witness against me!”
“You did that to yourself the second you stole from your husband and shoved my daughter’s cake into my face,” I said, my voice completely devoid of fear.
Olivia stepped closer, her hands clenched into claws. “Anthony is nothing without me! He was a boring, lumbering freight heir until I gave him style! I gave him connections! And you… you were just a pathetic little schoolteacher who got lucky!”
“And yet,” I said, looking her up and down with quiet pity, “I’m going home to my daughter, to my house, and to a clean conscience. And you’re going to a women’s correctional facility for six years.”
Olivia’s face twisted in pure, unhinged rage. She raised her hand, fingers curled, lunging straight at me.
She never touched me.
A large, firm hand clamped onto her wrist like an iron vise, stopping her dead in her tracks.
Anthony stepped out from behind a parked SUV.
He didn't yell. He just twisted her arm slightly, forcing her to step back, his eyes burning into hers with a cold, terrifying authority.
“One more inch, Olivia,” Anthony said, his voice dropping into a register that made the hair on the back of my neck stand up, “and I call the county sheriff right now. You’ll spend the next three weeks in a holding cell waiting for your trial date.”
Olivia gasped, pulling her wrist free. She looked from Anthony to me, realizing that she was completely, irrevocably defeated.

She turned on her heel and scurried through the parking lot like a frightened rat, disappearing into the gray afternoon.
