Chapter 5

The footsteps stopped directly outside the metal door. Through the thin steel panel, I heard the rasp of heavy breathing and the unmistakable metallic click of a firearm slide chambering a round.

"I know you're in there, Clara," Evan's voice came through the door, smooth, dripping with mock intimacy, but carrying an edge of sheer venom. "The security company called my phone twenty minutes ago. A fence sensor tripped right behind this row. You always were predictable when you panicked."

Marcus motioned to me with his hand, pointing toward the deep shadow behind a stack of industrial shelving in the far corner. I slipped behind the metal frame, clutching Julian’s red journal to my chest as if it were a shield.

"Come on out, Clara," Evan called again, his voice closer now. "You think you’re being clever? Peter’s sitting outside in the Mercedes with Detective Miller. In ten minutes, the local tactical team is going to breach this unit. You’re going to be processed as an emotionally disturbed fugitive who kidnapped Sophie from her legal guardians."

"Evan," Marcus shouted, stepping into the center of the locker, his voice deliberately loud to draw Evan's attention away from my corner. "You touch that door and you’re committing an armed home invasion on commercial property."

A mocking laugh drifted through the metal. "Marcus? You really are a fool. Julian died because he didn't know when to compromise, and you're about to make the exact same mistake."

The lock rattled. The metal door began to roll up with a screech of rusted tracks.

Evan stood framed against the rain-slicked courtyard. The left side of his face was swollen, a thick white butterfly bandage covering the gash from the bronze urn. In his right hand, he held a black 9mm pistol, held low and steady. Behind him, the headlights of a black Mercedes illuminated the falling rain.

Peter stood near the rear bumper of the car, drenched, his tuxedo ruined, shivering violently. "Evan, please," Peter stammered, his eyes darting wildly down the empty alley. "You said we were just going to get the papers! You said we weren't going to hurt anyone!"

"Shut up, Peter!" Evan snapped, not turning around. "You’ve been whining for three years. Get over here and search the unit."

Evan stepped inside the locker, his gun sweeping across the space. The beam from his tactical flashlight caught Marcus standing with his hands raised.

"Where is she, Marcus?" Evan asked softly.

"She’s gone, Evan. She took Sophie and crossed the state line an hour ago. You’re finished. The feds have the Caymans audit."

Evan smiled, a cold, empty grin that showed his teeth. "You’re a terrible liar. Her wedding dress was found in the trash can behind your house. She’s here."

Evan moved his flashlight beam toward the back corner. The light flicked across my shoes.

"Found you, sweetheart," Evan said, stepping forward.

At that exact moment, Marcus lunged.

Marcus wasn't a fighter, but he had Julian’s memory burning in his gut. He slammed his body into Evan’s gun arm, knocking the pistol off-target. A deafening gunshot roared inside the enclosed metal locker, the muzzle flash illuminating the room in blinding white. The bullet ricocheted off a steel beam with a high-pitched whine.

"Clara, run!" Marcus roared, wrestling Evan against the corrugated wall.

Evan drove his elbow into Marcus’s ribs with professional brutality. Marcus grunted, his breath exploding from his lungs, but he held onto Evan’s wrists with desperate fury.

I didn't run away. I ran straight at them.

I grabbed a heavy iron pipe wrench resting on Julian’s drafting table and swung it downward with both hands, aiming directly for Evan’s right wrist.

The iron collided with his arm with a sickening *thwack*.

Evan screamed in agony, the pistol dropping from his numb, broken fingers onto the concrete floor.

Peter appeared in the doorway, his eyes wide with horror as he saw Evan bleeding and disarmed. "Evan! Peter, help me!" Evan snarled, clutching his fractured arm to his chest.

Peter looked at Evan, then at me. His own sister, barefoot, covered in grime, holding an iron pipe, ready to split a man’s skull to survive.

"Clara..." Peter whispered, stepping back into the rain. "I... I didn't want him to die. It was supposed to be a small crash. Just enough to keep him from the board meeting!"

"You cut the brakes on a mountain road, Peter!" I screamed, tears finally tearing down my cheeks. "He was your brother! He loved you! He paid your debts!"

"He was going to ruin me!" Peter sobbed, his voice cracking into high-pitched hysteria. "He was going to let them take my house! He didn't care about me!"

"I cared about you," I said, my voice dropping into a whisper that cut through Peter's soul deeper than any scream. "And you helped murder my husband and tried to steal my daughter."

Evan lunged toward the dropped gun with his good left hand, but Marcus kicked the weapon across the floor, sending it skittering out into the muddy alley.

"Get in the car, Peter!" Evan barked, retreating toward the door while holding his shattered arm. "Get in the car, you idiot! We're leaving!"

Peter didn't need to be told twice. He turned and sprinted toward the Mercedes. Evan backed out of the locker, his eyes locked on mine with murderous hatred.

"You won't survive the weekend, Clara," Evan spat, his face pale with shock and pain. "I don't care where you hide. I will bury you right next to Julian."

He slammed the roll-up door shut from the outside. A second later, the Mercedes’s engine roared, tires screeching against the wet gravel as they sped out of the storage complex.

Marcus collapsed against the tool chest, clutching his bruised side, breathing in ragged gasps. "Are you hit?" he asked through gritted teeth.

"No," I breathed, my hands trembling as I lowered the wrench. "Are you?"

"Just a cracked rib, I think," Marcus groaned, pulling himself upright. "We have what we came for. Julian’s journal. Let’s get out of here before Miller shows up."

I held the red leather book tightly against my chest. For the first time in three years, I wasn't just defending myself.

I had the weapon that would hang them both.
