Chapter 9

The heavy security doors of Julian’s private laboratory hissed open as Evan swiped his executive override badge.
Inside, the room was preserved exactly as it had been on the night Julian died. His dual monitors sat dark and dormant on the expansive walnut desk; his white lab coat hung over the back of the leather chair; a half-finished schematic of the algorithmic encryption network was still pinned to the corkboard on the wall.
It smelled of Julian. The faint aroma of bergamot, coffee, and paper. Being here was like stepping into a tomb.
The guard shoved me into the center of the room. The second guard held Sophie tightly by the shoulders near the door. The little girl was trembling so violently her teeth clicked together, her wide hazel eyes locked onto mine.
"Be brave, Sophie," I whispered, holding her gaze. "Mommy is right here. Look at me, baby. Just look at Mommy."
"Shut up," Evan snapped, walking around Julian’s desk. With his uninjured left hand, he pressed the power toggle beneath the main console.
The two monitors hummed to life, casting a cold, luminescent blue glow across the darkened lab.
The screen displayed a black background with a single, pulsing red graphic: a locked vault door surrounded by two biometric input prompts.
*SECURITY PROTOCOL VANCE-01*
*VOICE SIGNATURE REQUIRED: DESIGNATED HEIR (SOPHIE VANCE)*
*PASSPHRASE REQUIRED: AUTHORIZED SPOUSE (CLARA VANCE)*
*ATTEMPTS REMAINING: 1*
Peter stood near the corner of the lab, chewing his fingernails until they bled, his eyes darting frantically between Evan and the door. "Evan... once she unlocks it... we transfer the funds and we leave the country, right? You promised me a private jet to Zurich."
"Shut your pathetic mouth, Peter," Evan said without looking at him. "You’ll get what you deserve."
Evan tapped the microphone icon on the terminal. A high-frequency tone sounded through the lab's speakers.
*AWAITING VOICE SAMPLE: HEIR.*
Evan motioned to the guard holding Sophie. "Bring her here."
The guard pushed Sophie forward until she stood directly in front of the desk, her chin barely reaching the level of the keyboard. Evan leaned down, his swollen, bandaged face inches from hers.
"Speak into the microphone, little girl," Evan whispered, his voice dripping with malice. "Say your full name. Say: *'Sophie Clara Vance.'*"
Sophie looked up at him, her lips trembling. She looked back at me, tears streaming down her pale cheeks. "Mommy... I'm scared."
"Say it, Sophie," I said softly, my voice filled with every ounce of steady love I possessed. "Say your name for Daddy, baby. Daddy is listening."
Sophie sniffed hard, wiped her nose on her sleeve, and leaned toward the small black microphone on the desk.
"Sophie Clara Vance," she said clearly, her small voice ringing through the quiet room.
A green waveform rippled across the primary monitor.
*VOICE BIOMETRIC CONFIRMED: 99.8% MATCH (HEIR AUTHORIZED).*
Evan’s eyes flashed with manic triumph. He turned toward me, his hand hovering over the keyboard.
"Now you, Clara," Evan said, his breathing shallow and rapid. "The passphrase. Speak it into the mic. If you lie, or if you intentionally trigger a lockdown, I swear on my life your daughter won't leave this room alive."
I stepped forward until I was standing opposite him across Julian’s desk. I looked at the dark wood where Julian had rested his arms, where he had worked late into the night to build a future for our family.
I leaned down to the microphone.
"You are my true north," I whispered.
The second waveform spiked across the screen, turning from yellow to vibrant green.
A heavy, mechanical *clack* sounded from the server rack in the corner as the physical security drives unlocked.
*SECURITY CLEARED. ACCESS GRANTED TO MASTER VAULT.*
Folders began populating the desktop in rapid succession: *PATENT SCHEMATICS (CORE ALGORITHM)*, *OFFSHORE AUDIT FORENSICS*, *CAYMAN ACCOUNTS (PETER MILLER & EVAN VANCE)*, and at the very top, a high-resolution video file labeled: *LAB_SECURITY_CAM_OCTOBER_14.MP4*.
Evan ignored the video file. His left hand flew across the trackpad, clicking directly on the patent schematics and the offshore transfer portal. "Finally," he muttered, his voice trembling with greed. "Three years of pretending to love a broken widow and her brat. Three years of listening to you whine about Julian’s memory."
Peter stepped closer, his eyes wide. "The money... transfer my share, Evan! The five million! Do it now!"
"Your share?" Evan turned his head slowly, looking at Peter with utter, unadulterated contempt. "You think you’re getting five million dollars, Peter? You’re an accessory to capital murder. You’re a liability."
Peter’s face went completely white. "What?"
Evan reached into his waistband with his left hand, pulling a snub-nosed .38 revolver from his belt.
He didn't hesitate. He pointed the gun directly at Peter’s chest.
"Evan, no!" Peter shrieked, throwing his hands up.
*BANG.*
The gunshot inside the enclosed laboratory was deafening. The bullet struck Peter square in the sternum. Peter stumbled backward into the glass whiteboard, his eyes wide in disbelief as a dark red stain blossomed across his white shirt. He slid down the glass to the floor, leaving a thick smear of crimson behind him, gasping for air that wouldn't come.
Sophie screamed, covering her ears.
"One down," Evan said coldly, turning the gun toward me. "And now for the tragic murder-suicide. The unstable bride who killed her brother over Julian’s estate, and then took her own life along with her daughter. The police won't question it for a second."
I stood between Evan and Sophie, my arms spread wide. "Let her go, Evan. She's five years old. Kill me, but let her live."
"No loose ends, Clara," Evan smiled, cocking the hammer of the revolver. "Julian taught me that."
Before he could pull the trigger, the laboratory’s main monitors flashed violently, and a voice boomed through the high-fidelity surround sound speakers of the room.
"Evan," the voice said.
It was Julian’s voice. Strong, calm, and terrifyingly clear.
Evan froze, his gun arm trembling as his eyes darted wildly toward the ceiling speakers. "What... what is that?"
On the massive dual screens, the video file *LAB_SECURITY_CAM_OCTOBER_14.MP4* had automatically maximized, playing in full 4K resolution.
The timestamp was October 14, three years ago, at 11:30 PM.
The video showed this exact laboratory. Julian was sitting at his desk. And behind him, clear as day on the high-definition security camera, stood Evan and Peter.
On the video, Evan was pouring a clear liquid from a small glass vial into Julian’s stainless-steel water bottle while Peter stood watch at the door.
*"Succinylcholine, Peter,"* the Evan on the video said clearly. *"A light dose. Just enough to paralyze his diaphragm thirty minutes into his drive home. By the time he reaches Blackwood Bluff, he won't be able to breathe, let alone press the brake pedal."*
Evan stared at the screen, his face draining of all color. "No... that camera was disabled! Peter, you disabled that feed!"
On the floor, Peter let out a bloody, rattling laugh from his lips. "Julian... Julian always had... a secondary cloud backup... you bastard..."
At that exact moment, the computer speakers emitted a sharp, continuous electronic chime.
A red banner flashed across the top of the video:
*BROADCAST PROTOCOL ACTIVATED: LIVE FEED TRANSMITTED TO FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION, METROPOLITAN POLICE INTERNAL AFFAIRS, AND NATIONAL PRESS SYNDICATE.*
Julian had laid the trap three years ago. The moment the master vault was unlocked, the security footage of his murder was programmed to broadcast to every major law enforcement agency and news outlet in the country.
Evan dropped the revolver to the desk in sheer, paralyzing horror.
"No..." he whimpered. "No, no, no..."
May you like
He was undone. Not by a gun. Not by an army. But by the ghost of the man he had murdered, reaching across three years of time to deliver his own justice.
