Chapter 7 - The Arrests

The story didn't end at the courthouse doors.

By 8:00 p.m. that evening, the scandal surrounding the Vance family had exploded into a full-blown national news storm.

The viral video of my father slapping me on the graduation stage—combined with the sudden collapse of Vance Development and the federal indictment of Robert Sterling—turned our family name into a textbook example of corporate greed and domestic abuse.

I sat in the quiet dining room of a small, local bistro near the academy with Paige and her parents. For the first time in years, I ate a hot, peaceful meal without checking a bank app or worrying about how I was going to pay for my next semester's textbooks.

My phone rang on the table. The caller ID displayed the badge number of Detective Marcus Vance—no relation to us—from the Henrico County Financial Crimes Unit.

I stepped outside onto the quiet sidewalk to answer.

"Commander Vance," Detective Vance spoke into the line. "I wanted to inform you personally that we executed search warrants at your parents' residence in River Road two hours ago."

I pulled my coat tighter against the cool evening air. "What did you find, Detective?"

"Everything," Detective Vance replied grimly. "Offshore bank accounts in the Cayman Islands, secondary sets of corporate ledgers, and a safe in your father's master closet containing dozens of forged financial documents—including pre-signed loan applications carrying your name."

"Were my parents home?"

"They were," the detective confirmed. "Your father attempted to resist arrest when officers arrived. Both Harold and Eleanor Vance are currently being processed at the county jail. They are being held without bail pending their arraignment tomorrow morning on charges of grand larceny, identity theft, corporate embezzlement, and felony child financial exploitation."

I took a deep breath, looking up at the clear, star-filled night sky. "And my brother?"

"Julian was named as a co-conspirator regarding the $42,800 wire transfer," Detective Vance explained. "He was picked up at a hotel near the airport an hour ago. He’s currently being interviewed by federal prosecutors."

A strange, quiet calm settled over my chest. There was no rage left in me, no desire for vengeance. Just the cold, clean feeling of absolute justice.

"Thank you for the update, Detective," I said.

"Commander," the detective added before hanging up. "I watched the footage of your graduation ceremony today. As a veteran myself... you handled yourself with extraordinary honor. Congratulations on your commission."

"Thank you, sir," I replied softly.

I hung up the phone and stood on the sidewalk for a moment, watching the city lights twinkle in the distance.

My parents had spent my entire life trying to convince me that I was weak, that I was nothing without their name and their money. But as I stood there under the open sky, wearing the uniform I had earned with my own blood, sweat, and tears, I realized the absolute truth:

They hadn't made me weak. They had inadvertently forged me into steel.
