Chapter 18 - Saturday Morning in the Park

Saturday morning dawned bright, crisp, and brilliantly clear. The overnight snowfall had transformed Rapid City into a pristine winter wonderland, with white powder glistening under a brilliant blue South Dakota sky.
Maisie and I bundled up in heavy winter coats, woolen scarves, and waterproof boots, heading out to Elm Street Park for a morning of sledding and hot chocolate. The park was alive with the sound of children laughing, snow crunching underfoot, and colorful sleds racing down the snow-covered hills.
As we reached the top of the main sledding hill, Maisie clutched her red plastic sled tightly, her cheeks rosy pink from the crisp air.
"Ready, Daddy?" she called out excitedly.
"Ready when you are, sweetie!" I shouted back.
With a joyful squeal, she pushed off the crest of the hill, hurtling down the snow-packed slope with her arms raised in pure, unadulterated happiness. I jogged down the side of the hill after her, my heart feeling lighter than it had in years.
When she reached the bottom, she tumbled off the sled into a soft snowbank, popping up a second later covered in white powder from head to toe, laughing hysterically. I scooped her up into my arms, spinning her around in the crisp morning air as she shrieked with delight.
A few yards away, a local mother standing near the park benches smiled warmly as she watched us. "Looks like you're having the best morning ever," she said.
"We really are," I smiled back, setting Maisie gently on her feet.
As we walked back toward the truck to grab our thermoses of hot chocolate, I looked down at Maisie, who was happily holding my hand, swinging our arms back and forth between us.
"Daddy?" she asked softly, looking up at me.
"Yeah, sweetie?"
"Can we bake another strawberry cake this weekend? A really big one?"
I smiled, feeling the strawberry drawing resting safely in my jacket pocket right over my heart.
May you like
"We can bake as many strawberry cakes as you want, sweetie," I said warmly. "And this time, we'll light all eight candles."
