Chapter 20 - The Final Candle

The sun dipped below the rugged horizon of the Black Hills, painting the evening sky in brilliant shades of amber, violet, and deep rose. Inside our kitchen, the air was sweet with the rich, unmistakable scent of freshly baked strawberry cake—three layers high, homemade pink frosting smoothed meticulously over the top, and Maisie's name written proudly across the center with an 'S' that curved precisely the right way.
We sat together at the wooden kitchen table, the rest of the house quiet and peaceful. Eight bright birthday candles stood tall and proud in a perfect circle across the top of the pink frosting, casting a warm, flickering glow across Maisie's glowing face.
"Are you ready, sweetie?" I asked softly, holding a box of matches in my hand.
Maisie nodded vigorously, her eyes wide with anticipation, her hands clasped tightly under her chin. "Ready!"
I struck a match against the box, a tiny flame bursting to life in the quiet room. One by one, I carefully lit each of the eight candles, watching the small yellow flames dance in the flickering light.
Maisie closed her eyes tightly, making a silent wish, her little chest rising and falling with deep, happy breaths. Then, on the count of three, she leaned forward and blew out every single candle in one massive, triumphant breath of air.
Smoke curled upward toward the ceiling, carrying the sweet scent of melted wax and strawberry frosting.
Maisie opened her eyes, beamed up at me with a proud, gap-toothed smile, and said the one word she had been waiting six long months to say out loud.
"Now."
May you like
I smiled back, wrapping her tightly in a warm, protective embrace, knowing that the past was finally behind us and our future was brighter than ever.
