Chapter 4 - The Breaking Point

Mia stood frozen in the hallway, her small hands clutching the hem of her sweatshirt. Her eyes moved from my face to Melissa's cold, unapologetic expression.

The silence in the kitchen became absolute. The faint sound of music and laughter from the living room felt like a cruel mockery.

"You... you did it on purpose?" Mia's voice trembled, barely louder than a whisper.

Melissa let out an exasperated sigh, rolling her eyes as if dealing with an annoying toddler. "Mia, sweetheart, be reasonable. Zoe's friends were already excited. It just made more sense to combine things. You can have a small cake with us later."

Mia didn't cry this time. Instead, something inside her went completely still. The bright, imaginative girl who had spent weeks drawing star charts and crafting name cards vanished, replaced by the crushing weight of betrayal.

She didn't yell. She didn't stomp her feet. She simply turned around, walked slowly back up the stairs, and closed her bedroom door with a soft, final click.

Something inside me snapped. The last remaining threads of patience, marriage, and civility frayed and parted.

"Get them out," I said.

Melissa stared at me, her eyebrows arched. "What did you just say?"

"I said, get them out of my house. Now."

"Are you insane?" Melissa laughed nervously, though a hint of genuine panic crept into her voice. "There are eight children in the living room! Their parents won't be back for another hour!"

"I don't care," I said, walking past her into the living room. I reached over and hit the wall switch, turning off the upbeat party music. The abrupt silence startled the children playing on the carpet. Zoe stood up immediately, her sparkly headband slipping slightly.

"Dad? What are you doing? We were in the middle of a game!" Zoe complained, crossing her arms just like her mother.

"Party's over, kids," I said, keeping my voice as calm as possible so I wouldn't frighten them. "Everyone pack up your things. Your parents are being notified to come pick you up right now."

"You can't do this!" Melissa rushed into the living room, her face flushing crimson with humiliation. "Scott, have you lost your mind? You're going to humiliate Zoe in front of her friends?!"

"You humiliated my daughter in front of her best friend today," I replied, pulling out my phone. "Consider this payback for the guest list."

Within twenty minutes, the living room was a scene of chaos. Confused children packed their backpacks while bewildered parents began arriving at the front door. Melissa stood by the entryway, hissing venomous threats at me under her breath, while Zoe locked herself in the upstairs bathroom, sobbing in outrage.

When the last car pulled away from the curb, the house descended into an oppressive, suffocating silence.

Melissa stormed back inside, slamming the front door so hard the framed portraits on the wall rattled. "Are you happy now?! You've destroyed my daughter's afternoon, you've humiliated me in front of our neighbors, and for what? For a silly little birthday card?!"

"It wasn't a silly card, Melissa," I said coldly, walking toward the stairs. "It was the line you crossed. And right now, I think you need to pack a bag and go stay at your mother's house for a few days, because I can't look at you."

Melissa froze, her mouth dropping open in genuine shock. "Are you seriously kicking me out over this?!"

"I'm not kicking you out," I replied steadily. "I'm giving us both space to realize that this marriage is completely broken. Because if you think destroying my daughter's happiness is acceptable collateral damage for Zoe's social calendar, you don't know me at all."

She glared at me with pure venom, grabbed her designer purse off the hall table, and marched out the door, screaming that I would regret this.

I locked the door behind her, leaned my forehead against the cool wood, and let out a long, shuddering breath. Then I walked upstairs to check on Mia.
