Chapter 6 - Consulting the Expert

I sat in my truck outside the garage for nearly an hour, the gray-blue folder clutched in my hands like a live grenade. The pieces of the puzzle began snapping together with terrifying clarity.
Why did Melissa favor Zoe so intensely? Why was Mia always treated like an inconvenient tenant in her own home? Why had Melissa gone out of her way to sabotage Mia's friendships, isolate her confidence, and make her feel small?
Because Mia was the primary obstacle standing between Melissa's daughter and a multi-million-dollar inheritance trust fund that Melissa had been quietly draining for years.
If Mia grew up feeling worthless, isolated, and disconnected from her extended family and friends, she would be far less likely to question her legal rights when she turned eighteen. She would quietly fade into the background while Zoe inherited everything.
I needed professional help immediately. I couldn't just confront Melissa with these papers; she and her high-priced attorney would bury me in litigation, claim the documents were stolen, or quietly liquidate the remaining assets before a judge could freeze them.
I pulled out my phone and dialed Sarah—the brilliant forensic litigation attorney who had helped me navigate the legal nightmares of the past.
"Scott?" Sarah answered on the second ring, her tone sharp and professional. "It's been a while. Everything okay with you and Riley—sorry, Mia?"
"Sarah, I need to see you right now," I said, my voice shaking with adrenaline. "I found something in my garage. It's a supplemental family trust established by my wife's late father. She's been systematically draining Mia's inheritance share to fund Zoe's luxury lifestyle."
There was a sharp intake of breath on the other end of the line. "Explain. Exactly what kind of trust are we talking about?"
"An irrevocable educational and estate trust worth well over a million dollars," I replied, reading the numbers off the ledger. "Melissa appointed herself sole administrator after her father died, bypassed the secondary oversight committee, and has transferred over four hundred thousand dollars in the last three years into personal equestrian and luxury asset accounts."
Sarah was silent for three seconds. When she spoke again, all warmth had vanished from her voice, replaced by cold, calculated legal focus.
"Scott, listen to me very carefully," Sarah instructed. "Do not speak to Melissa. Do not text her. Do not let her know you found that box. If she realizes those documents are missing, she will immediately file an emergency asset-concealment motion or attempt to liquidate the remaining trust holdings through offshore accounts."
"What do our next steps look like?" I asked, gripping the steering wheel.
"Tomorrow morning at 8:00 AM, we are filing an emergency ex-parte motion for a temporary restraining order in probate court," Sarah said firmly. "We're going to freeze every single account Melissa controls, audit every wire transfer she's made, and petition the court to strip her of her trusteeship permanently for gross fiduciary malfeasance and fraud."

"And what about the custody side?" I asked, thinking of how Melissa had treated Mia on her birthday.
"With documented financial fraud, systematic emotional abuse, and deliberate sabotage of a minor child's well-being on record? We won't just be looking at a divorce settlement, Scott," Sarah said grimly. "We'll be looking at sole custody, criminal referral, and total restitution."
