Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Pen

By seven o'clock on Christmas morning, the snow had stopped falling over Manhattan, leaving the streets blanketed in pristine white. Inside the St. Regis suite, Lily was awake, sitting in the center of the living room rug surrounded by opened packages of art supplies, books, and a handmade wool doll she had been asking for all winter. For the first time in twenty-four hours, the little girl was smiling.
Victoria sat nearby, sipping black coffee, when her secondary phone began buzzing incessantly.
It was Richard. He had called forty-two times since dawn. When Victoria didn't answer, a barrage of text messages flooded the screen.
*Victoria, pick up the phone right now!*
*The board members are calling my cell non-stop!*
*Harrison backed out! His lawyers sent a formal cancellation letter at 5 AM!*
*Mom is in the hospital with high blood pressure because of you!*
*If you don't come home and fix this, you will regret it!*
Victoria swiped the notifications away without replying.
Two minutes later, Marcus walked into the suite, holding a tablet with a grim expression. "They’ve shifted tactics," he said, handing the tablet to Victoria. "Chloe just posted this on Instagram and Facebook twenty minutes ago. It already has sixty thousand shares."
Victoria took the screen.
The video opened with Chloe Sterling sitting on an ornate sofa, dabbing her tearful eyes with a handkerchief. Behind her, Margaret lay dramatically on a recliner with an ice pack pressed to her forehead, groaning softly.
*"I never thought I’d have to make a video like this,"* Chloe sobbed into the camera, her voice dripping with calculated victimhood. *"On Christmas Eve, our family experienced something truly horrifying. My sister-in-law, Victoria, suffered what can only be described as a violent psychotic break. Because of a minor disagreement over a holiday dress, she attacked our elderly mother, destroyed our family’s corporate contracts, and fled into the night with her daughter, Lily. We are terrified for Lily’s safety. Victoria is unstable, vindictive, and dangerous. We are begging the public to help us locate my niece before Victoria harms her!"*
The comments below the video were a roaring cesspool of public outrage.
*What a monster! Taking a child on Christmas Eve?!*
*Arrest her! Put this woman in jail!*
*Poor Grandma! Look at that poor sweet old lady!*
*Share this everywhere! Find Lily!*
Victoria didn't flinch. Her face remained entirely calm, though a sharp, calculating gleam lit up her eyes.
"She thinks she can win in the court of public opinion," Victoria said quietly. "She thinks weaponizing social media will force me to come back and negotiate to save my reputation."
"The PR damage could affect our logistics stocks if they tie your name to the Vance brand," Marcus warned. "We should issue a formal cease-and-desist immediately."
"No," Victoria said, setting her coffee cup down with a soft click. "A legal cease-and-desist makes us look defensive. It makes people think we have something to hide. If Chloe wants to turn this into a public trial, then let’s give the public the evidence they’re begging for."
"What do you have?" Marcus asked, raising an eyebrow.
"The Sterling mansion has a state-of-the-art security system," Victoria replied coolly. "Richard installed it three years ago to protect his art collection. Ultra-high-definition cameras with directional audio in every common area—including the living room."
"Richard changed the master passwords last month," Marcus pointed out.
Victoria smiled—a cold, razor-thin expression. "Richard thinks he changed them. But the system was installed by Vance Security Solutions, a direct subsidiary of my family’s tech holding company. I don't need Richard’s password. I own the server."
Victoria stood up, walked to the laptop on the desk, and logged into the encrypted cloud portal. With three clicks, she brought up the raw, unedited footage from the Sterling living room timestamped at 8:14 PM, December 24th.
The video quality was crystal clear. The audio captured every single word.
On the screen, Margaret could be seen storming across the room, cursing at ten-year-old Lily. The camera caught the exact moment Margaret’s manicured claws dug into Lily’s collar, ripping the dress down to the seams while the little girl screamed in terror. It captured Bella laughing on the sofa, Chloe smirking, and Richard standing by the bar, casually sipping his drink while muttering that Lily should shut up.
It captured Victoria’s calm intervention, the gentle wrapping of Lily in the coat, and the precise moment Victoria took the tailor shears to the fraudulent guarantee document.
"It’s perfect," Marcus murmured, his eyes widening. "It’s absolute, undeniable child abuse and public humiliation."
"Export the raw file," Victoria commanded. "Don't edit a single frame. Don't add dramatic music. Just release the footage directly under the Vance Corporate official press handle, accompanied by Dr. Ramirez’s forensic medical report showing the claw marks on Lily’s neck."
"And the caption?" Marcus asked.
Victoria looked over at Lily, who was happily coloring a picture of a winter landscape by the Christmas tree, safe and warm.

"The caption is simple," Victoria said. *"The truth does not need a filter. The Sterling family will answer for every drop of my daughter’s tears."*
