Chapter 5 - The Viral Guillotine

Within forty-five minutes of the Vance Corporate account dropping the high-definition security footage, the internet completely inverted.
Chloe’s tearful video, which had been gaining sympathetic traction across Facebook and lifestyle blogs, became the staging ground for one of the swiftest, most brutal public backlashes in recent memory.
Media outlets picked up the raw footage immediately. The contrasting reality was devastating: on one hand, Chloe crying about a "violent psychotic break"; on the other hand, clear, indisputable video evidence of an arrogant grandmother violently assaulting a ten-year-old child while the girl's father stood drinking scotch.
The public reaction was instantaneous and merciless.
*#BoycottSterlingEnterprises* surged to the number one trending topic nationwide.
*#JusticeForLily* followed closely behind.
Comments flooded Chloe’s social media channels at a rate of five thousand per minute:
*You absolute monsters! She didn't have a break—she protected her baby from an abusive hag!*
*Look at the mother-in-law digging her nails into that little girl's neck! That is felonious assault!*
*The father didn't even move! He just sipped his drink! What kind of scumbag lets his mother do that to his daughter?!*
*Arrest Margaret Sterling! Arrest Richard Sterling!*
By noon, Chloe had frantically deleted her original video, but it was far too late. Thousands of creators had already saved the clip, side-by-sided it with the security footage, and dissected the Sterling family’s hypocrisy frame by frame.
Meanwhile, inside the Sterling Manor, the atmosphere was apocalyptic.
Richard sat at the long dining table, his hands shaking so violently he could barely hold his coffee mug. The phone lines were ringing off the hook—not from investors, but from furious board members, business partners, and reporters demanding statements.
Chloe burst into the dining room, her face pale, mascara running down her cheeks for real this time.
"Mom! Richard! Turn on the TV! Look at your phones!" Chloe screamed, hyperventilating. "The video! She leaked the living room security video!"
Margaret, who had been sitting on the couch wrapped in a mink blanket, snatched Chloe’s phone. As she watched the crystal-clear recording of herself ripping Lily’s dress, Margaret’s face turned an ashen shade of grey.
"How... how did she get this?!" Margaret choked out, her voice shrill with hysteria. "Richard, you told me you controlled the security passwords!"
"I did!" Richard yelled, slamming his fists onto the table. "I changed them myself last month!"
"Well, she posted the whole thing!" Chloe wailed, pacing back and forth. "Sponsors are pulling out of my boutique! My clients are canceling appointments! People are leaving thousands of one-star reviews calling me a child abuser! My career is ruined!"
Before Richard could respond, the heavy front door knocker sounded.
Richard jumped up, hope flashing briefly in his eyes. "Maybe it's the PR agency. I called them three hours ago—"
He rushed to the foyer and pulled the door open.
It was not a PR agency.
Standing on the porch were four uniformed officers from the Westchester County Police Department, accompanied by two detectives in long trench coats. Behind them, an unmarked police cruiser sat in the driveway, its lights flashing red and blue against the snow.
"Richard Sterling?" the lead detective asked, flashing his badge.
"Yes... what is this about?" Richard asked, his voice cracking.
"We have a warrant for the arrest of Margaret Sterling for third-degree assault, endangering the welfare of a child, and reckless endangerment," the detective stated with cold professionalism. "We also have an emergency temporary restraining order served on behalf of Victoria Vance and Lily Sterling. You and your mother are legally barred from contacting or approaching either of them within five hundred feet."
From the living room, Margaret heard the words. She let out a piercing shriek of terror.
"You can't arrest me!" Margaret screamed, stumbling into the foyer, waving her hands wildly. "I am Margaret Sterling! My family built this town! That little girl is my granddaughter! I was disciplining her!"
The detective stepped inside, his face unimpressed. "Ma'am, turn around and place your hands behind your back."
"Richard! Do something!" Margaret shrieked, backing away toward the stairs. "Tell them who we are! Call the mayor! Richard!"
"Officer, please, there’s been a misunderstanding—" Richard tried to intervene, stepping forward, but the second detective pushed him firmly back against the wall.
"Step back, sir. Interfere with this arrest, and you’ll be in handcuffs for obstruction before your mother reaches the car."

With the neighbors watching from behind their curtains and several paparazzi already snapping photos from the gate, Margaret Sterling—the grand matriarch who had ruled her family with an iron fist—was handcuffed, escorted down her own stone front steps, and pushed into the back of a police cruiser in broad daylight on Christmas Day.
