Chapter 10 - A New Dawn

Six months later, the early summer sun bathed the grounds of Vitali House in golden light.

The high stone walls and security gates still stood, but the heavy, suffocating atmosphere of dread had completely vanished. The dark velvet curtains had been replaced with sheer ivory linens that fluttered in the warm breeze, filling the cavernous rooms with sunlight and the sweet fragrance of blooming hydrangeas.

In the gardens, Rose was chasing a golden retriever puppy across the manicured lawns, her joyous laughter ringing through the open French doors.

I stood by the kitchen island, arranging freshly cut roses into a crystal vase, wearing a simple linen summer dress.

Over the past half-year, the world had transformed.

Marco Bellini had been sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole at a maximum-security penitentiary. Serena Miller had accepted a ten-year plea deal for grand theft and conspiracy, her high-society dreams reduced to an orange prison jumpsuit.

Dominic had systematically dismantled the underground remnants of his father’s old network. He had liquidated the shipping lines associated with the past, pouring hundreds of millions of dollars into legitimate commercial ventures, community development, and a new charitable foundation named in his father’s honor: *The Anthony Vitali Foundation for Underprivileged Children.*

And he had appointed me as the foundation’s executive director.

I was no longer the frightened widow hiding in the housekeeping quarters, wondering how I would feed my daughter. Dominic had given me purpose, dignity, and a future.

Footsteps approached from behind.

Warm, strong arms wrapped gently around my waist, pulling me back against a broad, solid chest. Dominic buried his face in my hair, inhaling deeply.

“You smell like sunshine,” he murmured, his deep baritone vibrating against my back.

I smiled, leaning my head against his shoulder. “And you’re home early from the foundation meeting.”

“I couldn't stay away,” he replied, repeating the words he had spoken months ago, but this time with pure, untainted tenderness. “How was your morning?”

“Wonderful,” I said, turning in his arms to face him. I reached up and adjusted the collar of his open-collared shirt. “Rose taught the puppy how to roll over. She claims she’s training him to be a guard dog.”

Dominic laughed, a rich, warm sound that filled the kitchen. “A very terrifying golden retriever.”

He took my hand and led me toward the grand music room.

The room was no longer a museum of cold secrets. The Steinway grand piano stood proudly in the center, its polished black lacquer gleaming under the sunlight streaming through the arched windows. On the music stand rested sheet music for beginner piano lessons.

Dominic sat down on the leather bench and pulled me down beside him.

He didn't touch the keys. Instead, he turned to face me, taking both of my hands into his large, warm palms. His gray eyes, once so guarded and stormy, were soft, vulnerable, and brimming with emotion.

“Emily,” he began softly. “Six months ago, I was a man living in the dark. I thought my purpose was just to protect what was left of my father’s empire and survive the wolves. Then a brave little girl whispered a secret to me under the stairs, and a courageous, beautiful woman showed me what a true home feels like.”

My breath caught in my throat. My heart fluttered wildly as Dominic reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a small, velvet-lined box and flipped it open.

Inside rested an exquisite vintage diamond ring, surrounded by a halo of brilliant sapphires—simple, elegant, and timeless.

“You and Rose saved my life in every way a man can be saved,” Dominic whispered, his voice thick with emotion. “I don't want you to just be the director of my foundation, Emily. I want you to be my partner. My equal. My wife. Will you marry me?”

Tears spilled over my lashes, hot and joyous, tracking down my cheeks.

“Yes,” I choked out, throwing my arms around his neck. “Yes, Dominic! A thousand times yes!”

He caught me tightly, lifting me slightly from the bench, and pressed his lips to mine in a deep, passionate kiss that washed away every remnant of grief, fear, and sorrow from our pasts.

“Mommy! Uncle Dominic!”

Rose came bounding into the music room, the puppy tumbling at her heels. She skidded to a halt on the hardwood floor, her eyes wide as she saw Dominic holding my hand, the sparkling ring catching the light.

“Are you getting married?” Rose gasped, bouncing on her toes.

Dominic laughed, opening his arm to beckon her over. Rose climbed onto his lap, beaming from ear to ear.

“Only if our master detective gives her permission,” Dominic said solemnly, tapping her nose.

Rose wrapped her arms around both of our necks, pulling us into a tight, giggling hug.

“I give you a hundred permissions!” she declared triumphantly. “Because Uncle Dominic isn't a secret spy. He’s our family.”

May you like

Dominic looked at me over our daughter’s head, his heart in his eyes, and I knew with absolute certainty that the dark storm had finally passed.

We had found our dawn, and we were finally home.
