Chapter 5 - Breach at the Sanctuary

The sounds of violence outside were muffled but unmistakable: the crunch of gravel under heavy tires, the shatter of reinforced glass on the ground floor, and the abrupt, staccato bark of gunfire.

I stood in the center of the bedroom, holding the heavy brass poker with both hands, my breath coming in ragged gasps. Every maternal instinct in my body screamed at me to run, but there was nowhere to go. My only job was to stand between whatever was out there and the steel door where my daughter was hidden.

Footsteps heavy and hurried pounded down the hallway.

The door handle rattled violently.

“Emily! Open up! It’s Marcus!”

I rushed forward and disengaged the deadbolt. Marcus stumbled in, his shoulder drenched in dark blood, his rifle held loosely in his left hand.

“They cut through the lower security post,” he gasped, leaning heavily against the doorframe. “There are at least six of them. Highly trained mercenaries. Marco isn't playing games anymore.”

“Where is Dominic?” I cried, helping him sit against the bed frame.

“Two minutes out,” Marcus groaned, pressing a hand to his wound. “They have the staircase pinned down. If they get up here—”

Before he could finish, the sharp report of a shotgun blast obliterated the lock of the hallway access door.

Marcus raised his rifle with one arm, but a hail of automatic fire punched through the drywall, forcing him to drop flat. Two men in black tactical gear and balaclavas moved through the smoke, weapons raised.

“Drop the weapon!” one barked in a rough eastern-European accent.

I stepped in front of Marcus, raising the fire poker like a sword, my entire body shaking with raw adrenaline. “Get away from us!”

The lead gunman laughed, a cruel, mocking sound, and stepped forward, reaching out to rip the poker from my hands.

Suddenly, the bay window behind them exploded inward in a cascade of shattered glass and splintered wood.

A high-tensile grappling hook swung into the room, followed immediately by Dominic Vitali.

He didn't hesitate.

Moving with lethal, terrifying precision born of a lifetime navigating danger, Dominic fired three controlled shots before his boots even hit the carpet.

The two mercenaries collapsed instantly.

Dominic rolled to his feet, swept the hallway with his sidearm, and dispatched a third attacker advancing down the corridor with two swift rounds to the chest.

Silence fell over the room, thick and suffocating, broken only by the smell of cordite and the howling wind blowing through the shattered window.

Dominic turned.

His coat was torn, his cheek grazed with blood, his eyes burning with an unholy fury. But the moment his gaze landed on me, the darkness vanished, replaced by sheer, desperate relief.

“Emily,” he breathed, crossing the room in three strides.

He dropped his weapon onto the bedside table and pulled me into his arms.

I dropped the fire poker. It clattered to the floor as I buried my face into his chest, clutching his shirt with both hands, sobbing uncontrollably. The terror that had kept me rigid for the past thirty minutes dissolved against his warmth.

He held me tightly, one hand cupping the back of my head, shielding me against him as if he could absorb all the violence of the world on my behalf.

“I have you,” he whispered fiercely against my hair. “I have you, Emily. You’re safe. I swear to God you’re safe.”

“Rose...” I choked out. “Rose is in the closet...”

Dominic released me gently, keeping one arm around my waist, and walked over to the hidden panel. He knocked three times in a rhythmic pattern.

“Rose? Sweetheart, the game is over. You won.”

The small latch clicked, and the steel door swung open.

Rose poked her head out, clutching her rabbit. She saw Dominic, saw me, and threw her little arms around Dominic’s neck as he scooped her up into his arms.

“Uncle Dominic! I was the quietest mouse!”

Dominic held the little girl against his shoulder, closing his eyes as a single tear cut through the grime and blood on his cheek.

May you like

“You were the bravest mouse in the world, Rose,” he said softly, his voice thick with emotion. He looked up at me, his eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that made my heart stop. “Now it’s my turn to end this.”
