Chapter 7 - The Legal Storm

By noon, the locks were entirely replaced, the security system codes had been reset, and my home was officially an impenetrable fortress once again.
Sitting at the kitchen island with a cup of hot coffee, I watched through the window as Skylar played happily on the backyard swing set I had bought her years ago—a simple, innocent sight that brought a quiet tear of relief to my eye.
My phone buzzed on the counter. It wasn't Brandon. It was an email notification from my corporate legal team in Los Angeles, confirming that the preliminary freeze on all joint accounts had been made permanent pending divorce and civil forfeiture proceedings. Furthermore, the forty-thousand-dollar personal loan Brandon had fraudulently applied for in my name had been officially flagged by the bank's internal fraud division, and the collection agencies had transferred the file directly to the district attorney's economic crimes unit.
In short: their entire house of cards had completely collapsed.
Around two o'clock in the afternoon, my phone rang with an unknown local number. I let it ring twice before swiping to answer.
"Charlotte?"
It was Brandon. His voice sounded hollow, broken, and utterly defeated—a far cry from the cocky, arrogant man who had laughed over seafood dinners just two nights ago.
"You're calling me from a burner phone, Brandon?" I asked calmly, taking a sip of my coffee. "Or did your mother's phone get disconnected along with everything else?"
"Please, Char... we have nowhere to go," he sobbed quietly over the line. "Mom is having panic attacks, Hailey is screaming her head off because her boutique lease fell through, and we're crashing in a cheap motel in downtown Riverside with three hundred dollars to our name. The bank accounts are completely locked—even my personal payroll deposit was seized by the fraud investigation unit."
I listened to his pathetic whining without feeling a single shred of pity. The well of my sympathy had run completely dry.
"You should have thought about that before you stole my identity, forged my signature, and fed our daughter instant soup while you dined on lobster," I said, my voice completely devoid of emotion.
"Char, we were married for seven years!" he pleaded, his voice breaking into hysterical sobs. "Doesn't that mean anything to you? Can't we work this out? I'll sign whatever divorce papers you want, just... just help us get off the hook with the D.A.'s office! If they press felony charges, I'll lose my license, I'll go to prison!"
"Then I suggest you hire a very good defense attorney, Brandon," I replied steadily. "Because my uncle and I are handing over the complete audit trail to the federal prosecutor on Monday morning. Every single dollar you stole, every fake document you filed, and every fraudulent loan you took out is going on public record."
"You're destroying me!" he screamed, his voice suddenly shifting from pathetic begging to furious desperation. "You're ruining my life! You'll never get a dime of alimony, and I'll make sure you regret the day you crossed me!"

"Try it," I said softly. "And let's see how well your threats hold up in front of a federal judge."
I hung up the phone, walked over to the kitchen sink, and blocked his number permanently.
