Chapter 9 - The Final Audit

Three months after that fateful Tuesday night, I sat at the dining room table—the very same table where Brandon had sat and lied to my face—reviewing the final asset recovery statement issued by the court receiver.
Every single dollar of my stolen savings had been legally restored. The fraudulent personal loans had been completely discharged and wiped from my credit report. The house title was formally reinstated under my exclusive, unencumbered trust, with my uncle and me as the sole trustees.
The financial wreckage of my marriage had been completely cleared away, leaving behind a clean slate and a rock-solid foundation for Skylar’s future.
The front door unlocked, and Skylar bounded into the house, dropping her school backpack on the floor with a loud thud.
"Mommy! Mommy, guess what?!" she shouted excitedly, running into the kitchen and jumping up onto the barstool beside me. "Mrs. Davis gave us back our art projects today, and she put mine right on the bulletin board in the front hallway!"
I smiled, closing the financial folder and pulling my daughter into a tight, loving embrace. "That's amazing, sweetie! What did you draw?"
"I drew our house," she beamed proudly, her amber eyes sparkling with absolute joy. "And I drew you, and me, and... and nobody else! Just us, safe inside our home forever."

My heart swelled with a deep, profound sense of peace. I kissed the top of her head, holding her close.
"Just us, baby," I whispered softly. "Safe and sound."
