Chapter 8 - The Ambush at the Polo Club

The Greenwich Polo Club was the pinnacle of Connecticut old-money aristocracy.
On a crisp Friday afternoon, the elite gathered on the terrace, sipping mimosas and discussing portfolios. Ryan Vance was there, sweating profusely through his linen shirt, practically begging an older venture capitalist for a ten-million-dollar bridge loan.
“I’m telling you, Arthur, Vance Logistics just needs thirty days!” Ryan pleaded, his voice cracking with hysteria. “The Sterling merger hit a temporary snag, but—”
“The Sterling merger is dead, Ryan,” a clear, commanding voice rang out over the terrace.
The chatter died instantly.
Every head turned toward the stone steps.
I walked up the terrace, flanked by Julian Harrington. I was wearing an immaculate cream-colored Chanel suit, oversized designer sunglasses, and diamonds that caught the afternoon sun like fire. I walked with the poise of an empress, my head held high, radiating an undeniable aura of absolute power.
Ryan stared at me, his eyes wide and bloodshot. “Clara? What are you doing here? You… you can’t keep following me!”
“I’m not following you, Ryan,” I said, stopping three feet away from him. “I’m here to return your medical advice.”
I pulled the red-stamped manila folder from my designer bag and threw it directly into his chest.
The papers fluttered across the stone terrace, landing at the feet of the wealthiest investors in New England.
Ryan frantically scooped up the top page. When his eyes hit the wire transfer receipt and the transcript of his conversation with Dr. Henderson, all the color drained from his skin until he looked like a walking corpse.
“Dr. Henderson was arrested two hours ago by federal agents for medical fraud and wire extortion,” I said, every word hitting the crowd like a sledgehammer. “The Massachusetts State Medical Board has revoked his license, and the Attorney General has already issued an arrest warrant for you and your mother for felony conspiracy and corporate fraud.”
Gasps erupted around the terrace. The venture capitalist Ryan had been begging backed away from him as if he were radioactive.
“Clara… no… please,” Ryan stammered, his knees shaking. “My mother… it was my mother’s idea! She forced me! Clara, we loved each other! You can’t put me in prison! Think about our four years together!”
Julian stepped forward, stepping directly into Ryan’s personal space. His towering presence cast a dark, suffocating shadow over my cowering ex-husband.
“She spent four years enduring your cowardice, Vance,” Julian growled, his voice sending a chill across the sunny terrace. “Now you will spend the next ten enduring federal penitentiary. Thomas, Marcus—ensure the state troopers waiting at the gate find their target.”
Two plainclothes officers strode onto the terrace, flashing gold badges. Within seconds, Ryan Vance’s hands were cuffed behind his back. As he was dragged away, weeping and screaming curses at his mother, not a single person on that terrace looked him in the eye.
Julian turned to me. In front of the entire elite assembly of Greenwich, he reached out, took my gloved hand, and raised it to his lips, kissing my knuckles with reverent tenderness.

“The past is dead, Clara,” he murmured into my skin. “Now, let us build your future.”
