Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

We thought the nightmare was over. We were wrong.
A desperate, cornered rat is the most dangerous creature alive. Evelyn Vance, realizing her family was facing total financial annihilation and a multi-year prison sentence, lost the last shred of her sanity.
Three days after Ryan’s arrest, while Julian was in Manhattan finalizing the hostile takeover of the remaining Vance assets, the unthinkable happened.
It was four in the afternoon. Leo and I were walking through the private rose gardens near the cliffside edge of Harrington Hall. Thomas and two security guards were stationed fifty yards away at the perimeter gate.
Suddenly, a black, unregistered SUV violently smashed through the side maintenance gate, tearing down the iron fence.
Two masked men leapt out, armed with stun guns and zip-ties. Behind the steering wheel sat Evelyn Vance, her face twisted into a maniacal, drug-fueled snarl of pure hatred.
“Take the brat!” Evelyn shrieked through the open window. “Take Harrington’s kid! We trade him for the charges! Take him!”
It happened in a fraction of a second.
One of the men lunged directly for Leo.
My maternal instincts overrode every shred of fear or self-preservation. I didn't scream. I didn't run.
I threw my entire body over Leo, slamming him beneath me onto the soft turf, shielding his head and spine with my torso.
*Crack!*
A brutal kick caught me in the ribs. Agony exploded across my chest, stealing my breath. But I tightened my grip on Leo, refusing to yield an inch.
“Mama!” Leo screamed, his voice loud, clear, and terrified. “MAMA!”
The attacker grabbed my hair, trying to wrench me off the child, but I whipped around, my fingers clawing fiercely across his exposed eyes. The man roared in pain, stumbling back.
Gunshots shattered the air.
Thomas and the estate security team were charging across the lawn, weapons drawn, firing with pinpoint tactical precision. The tires of the SUV exploded into shreds. The second attacker went down with a non-lethal shot to the shoulder.
Evelyn Vance tried to reverse, but a second security vehicle smashed into her rear bumper, trapping her against the stone wall.
Sirens wailed in the distance.
My vision began to blur at the edges. My ribs felt shattered, and a warm trickle of blood was running down my temple where my head had hit the stone border of the garden.
“Clara! Clara!”
Heavy boots pounded against the grass.
Julian.
He dropped to his knees beside me, his tailored coat discarded, his face paler than death itself. His large, trembling hands hovered over my body, terrified to hurt me further.
“Julian…” I wheezed, my voice fading. “Leo… is Leo okay?”
“I’m here, Mama! I’m here!” Leo’s tiny hands patted my bloody cheeks, tears washing away the dirt on my skin.
Julian pulled both of us into his massive arms, burying his face in my hair, his chest heaving with dry, agonizing sobs.
“You protected him,” Julian whispered, his voice breaking completely. “You threw yourself in front of wolves for my son. God help me, Clara… I cannot live without you. Look at me. Keep your eyes on me!”

As the world faded into black, the last thing I felt was Julian’s lips pressing fiercely, desperately against mine, sealing an unspoken vow that no contract could ever capture.
