Chapter 6 - Safe Harbor

While the foundations of Arthur’s world were cracking, five miles away in a high-security guest suite at the nearby military reserve base, Clara sat beside Owen on a soft leather couch.
Owen’s cheek was covered in sterile butterfly bandages. The swelling had started to go down, but the purple bruising extended all the way under his left eye. In his small hands, he clutched the half-finished plastic model of an F-22 Raptor, carefully painting the wings with gray enamel paint.
"Mommy?" Owen asked, his voice small and hesitant.
"Yes, baby?" Clara replied, gently brushing a strand of brown hair away from his uninjured forehead.
"Did Uncle Travis hurt me because Daddy doesn't love us?"
Clara felt a sharp, burning agony slice through her soul. She knelt down in front of him, taking both of his small hands into hers, looking straight into his wide, innocent eyes.
"Listen to me, Owen," she said, her voice fierce with maternal certainty. "Your uncle hurt you because he is a coward. He hurt you because he is weak, and small, and jealous of the amazing, brave boy you are. And what your grandfather and grandmother said were lies. Evil, poisonous lies."
"Daddy loves me?"
"Your daddy loves you more than life itself," Clara whispered, pulling him into a gentle embrace, being careful not to touch his bandage. "Your daddy is the strongest, bravest man in the world. And nobody—not Travis, not Grandpa, not anyone—is ever going to lay a hand on you again. I promise you that on my life."
A gentle knock sounded at the door.
Clara stood up, checking the peephole. Standing outside was a female Army captain wearing CID insignia, accompanied by two armed military police officers in tactical gear.
Clara cracked the door open. "Captain?"
"Mrs. Vance?" The captain saluted crisply. "I’m Captain Reynolds, lead investigator for the Special Victims and Family Protection Division, Fort Meade. We have secured a temporary federal protective order signed by a United States District Judge, barring Arthur, Evelyn, and Travis Sterling from coming within one thousand yards of you or your son."
"Thank you, Captain," Clara said, stepping back to let them in.
"We’ve also seized all digital recordings from the Sterling residence under a federal search warrant executed an hour ago," Reynolds continued, opening a tablet. "Your personal 4K footage was authenticated by our forensic unit. The chain of custody is locked. The evidence is catastrophic for the defense, ma'am. There is zero ambiguity. Travis Sterling's actions constitute aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury to a minor."
"What about my father?" Clara asked, her voice steady. "He tried to cover it up."
"Arthur Sterling's phone records show six calls to municipal officials, the local police chief, and an active attempt to intimidate the emergency room attending physician," Captain Reynolds replied with a grim smile. "He is being processed for felony tampering with a witness and conspiracy to obstruct a federal investigation. Furthermore, the Department of the Army is currently reviewing his retired pension status under Article 2 of the UCMJ for conduct unbecoming an officer."
Clara exhaled a long, shuddering breath. For thirty years, Arthur had used his retired rank like a bludgeon, terrorizing his wife, his daughter, and everyone around him, convinced his past service made him untouchable.
Now, that very same military structure was about to strip him down to nothing.
"When does Garrett arrive?" Clara asked softly.

Captain Reynolds checked her tactical watch. "The transport touched down at McGuire Air Force Base forty minutes ago. He is en route via tactical escort right now."
