Chapter 8 - The Siege of the Sterling Fortress

Travis jumped back from the window, gasping. "What is that?! Who is that?!"
Arthur stood up, his military instincts kicking in, though his knees wobbled like jelly. He stepped toward the window and parted the blinds with trembling fingers.
What he saw outside choked the air straight out of his lungs.
The entire street was completely blocked off. Three matte-black armored tactical carriers flanked by four unmarked federal utility vehicles were parked in an unbroken cordon across the front of the property. Behind them sat two township police cruisers, their emergency lights flashing silently, completely subordinate to the federal convoy.
Dozens of personnel in full tactical combat gear, armed with patrol rifles and bearing "FEDERAL MARSHAL" and "US ARMY CID" tactical patches, were already moving in textbook perimeter containment around the house.
"Arthur..." Evelyn whimpered, clutching her husband's arm so tightly her nails drew blood through his dress shirt. "Arthur, what is happening? Call the police! Call them right now!"
"Those *are* the police, Evelyn," Arthur croaked, his voice barely a rattle.
Before anyone could move toward the back exit, the front passenger door of the lead command vehicle swung open with a heavy metallic clunk.
A pair of polished combat boots hit the wet asphalt.
A towering silhouette stepped into the glaring white beams of the floodlights. He was dressed in crisp, tailored Army Operational Camouflage Pattern dress utilities. On his collar rested the gleaming silver eagles of a full Colonel. On his chest hung the combat infantryman badge, three rows of valor decorations, and the elite black-and-gold Ranger and Special Forces tabs.
Garrett Vance had arrived.
Beside him stepped a United States Federal Marshal holding a red-jacketed warrant folder, flanked by four armed tactical operators.
Garrett didn't jog. He didn't rush. He walked up the stone walkway toward the front door with the terrifying, rhythmic deliberation of an executioner. Every step resonated like a drumbeat of inevitable doom.
"He's here," Travis wheezed, stumbling backward into the foyer, his face completely pale, his bladder nearly letting go. "Dad, lock the door! Don't let him in! He's gonna kill me!"
"Garrett!" Arthur shouted toward the door, trying to summon a shred of his old commanding voice as he stood in the foyer. "This is private property! You have no authority here! Stand down immediately!"
*BANG!*
The heavy oak front door didn't just open—it shattered violently inward under the concussive force of a tactical hydraulic breaching ram. Wood splinters flew like shrapnel across the polished entryway.
"Federal agents! Nobody move! Hands where we can see them!" the lead marshal bellowed, clearing the threshold with weapons at low-ready.
Behind them walked Garrett Vance.
He filled the entire doorway. The cold night air rushed into the warm house, carrying with it the raw, electric scent of ozone and rain. Garrett’s eyes locked onto Travis.
There was no yelling. There was no wild theatrical rage. There was only a terrifying, abyssal coldness that made the temperature in the room drop twenty degrees.

Travis dropped to his knees behind the dining room table, sobbing uncontrollably, his hands locked behind his head. "Don't shoot! Please don't shoot! It was an accident! I swear to God it was an accident!"
