Chapter 7 - The Confession in the Dark

The smoke from flash-bang grenades hung thick in the grand hallway. Bullet holes scarred the priceless wainscoting, and broken glass crunched beneath our shoes as Marcus, Orion, and I navigated the chaos toward the main staircase.
As we reached the landing, the gunfire abruptly stopped, replaced by a tense, eerie quiet.
Then, heavy footsteps echoed from the foyer below.
"Dante!" I cried out, my heart leaping into my throat.
A tall figure emerged from the smoke at the base of the grand staircase. Dante’s white shirt was stained with soot and a dark smear of blood—though thankfully, none of it appeared to be his. He held his smoking pistol at his side, his chest heaving with exertion.
When his eyes locked onto mine standing at the top of the stairs, the cold, lethal mask on his face instantly shattered.
"Elena!" he shouted, taking the stairs two at a time.
He reached the landing and grabbed me by the shoulders, pulling me so hard against his chest that I could feel the frantic, rapid pounding of his heart.
"Are you hurt? Did they touch you?" he demanded frantically, his hands roving over my arms and face to check for injuries.
"I'm fine, Dante. I'm completely fine," I breathed, wrapping my arms around his waist. "Orion saved us. He took down one of the gunmen."
Dante looked down at Orion, who sat proudly beside my feet, panting happily with his tongue hanging out. A slow, genuine smile spread across Dante’s face—a rare, breathtaking sight that softened his harsh features entirely.
"Good boy," Dante murmured, reaching down to cuff the massive dog behind the ears.
Marcus stepped up, coughing slightly from the smoke. "Boss, we cleared the second team. Two captured, three neutralized. But Rossi's message is clear: he knows Elena is here, and he's not going to stop until he uses her to break us."
Dante’s smile vanished instantly, replaced by a look of cold, calculating fury. He pulled me gently behind him, shielding my body with his own.
"Call the inner circle," Dante ordered Marcus, his voice dripping with ice. "We are done playing defense. Tonight, we dismantle Rossi's operations piece by piece. Leave no safehouse standing."
An hour later, the estate had been secured, the wounded intruders locked away in the lower-level holding cells, and the smoke had cleared. Dante led me to his private quarters on the top floor—a sanctuary of dark wood, leather, and sweeping views of the glittering Manhattan skyline.
He poured two glasses of amber whiskey, handing one to me. My hands still trembled as I took it, taking a small sip that burned my throat in the best possible way.
Dante stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, staring out at the city lights.
"I didn't want you dragged into this world, Elena," he said quietly, his back to me. "When I found those files... I thought about hiding you away in Europe, keeping you safe from a distance. But when you petted Orion at that restaurant... when he chose you instantly... I knew the universe had made its choice."
I walked slowly across the room, stopping just behind him. I reached out, my fingers gently brushing against the blood-stained sleeve of his shirt.
"You didn't drag me into anything, Dante," I whispered. "For the first time in my life, I know who I am. And... I know who I want to stand beside."
May you like
Dante turned around slowly. His silver-flecked gray eyes searched my face, finding no trace of fear—only an undeniable, growing bond.
Without a word, he closed the distance between us, cupping my face in his warm hands, and pressed his lips softly against mine.
