Chapter 10 - A New Dawn

Six months later.
The morning sun broke over the rocky coastline of Maine, painting the sky in breathtaking shades of rose, gold, and lavender. The Atlantic Ocean was calm, gentle waves lapping rhythmically against the pristine white sand of the private cove.
On the wrap-around timber porch of the coastal home, I stood leaning against the cedar railing, holding a steaming mug of black tea.
A heavy, warm weight leaned affectionately against my bare shins.
I looked down and smiled. Orion stood tall, magnificent, and entirely whole. Along his left flank, a clean, silver scar was visible beneath his dense black fur—a badge of honor worn with pride. The veterinarian had performed a three-hour miracle surgery that night in Queens, and thanks to around-the-clock nursing (and copious amounts of seared ribeye steak), the great hound had made a flawless recovery.
Orion looked up at me, giving a low, contented *woof*, his tail thumping steadily against the deck floorboards.
"Morning, handsome," I whispered, kneeling down to scratch his favorite spot behind his cropped ears. He closed his eyes in pure bliss, leaning his entire weight into my hands just as he had done on that fateful night in the Manhattan restaurant.
A pair of strong, warm arms wrapped around my waist from behind.
Dante pulled me gently back against his broad chest, resting his chin on the crown of my head. He wore a soft gray linen shirt, barefoot and completely relaxed.
The syndicate was gone.
True to his word, Dante had executed a total, absolute exit from the underworld. The Falcone empire had been completely dismantled by federal indictments, Lorenzo and Enzo locked away in federal penitentiaries for life. Dante had transferred all his legitimate corporate holdings into a blind trust and a series of philanthropic foundations, walking away with clean hands, immense wealth, and his freedom.
And best of all, Clara was safe.
My grandmother lived in a state-of-the-art memory cottage just five miles down the coastal road, where a dedicated private team cared for her every need. Twice a week, Dante and I would bring Orion to visit her. Miraculously, even on her foggiest days, Clara always remembered the giant black dog, smiling warmly as she fed him biscuits from her apron.
"What are you thinking about?" Dante murmured into my ear, his lips brushing the sensitive skin of my neck.
"About how impossible all of this seems," I whispered, turning in his arms to look up into his striking gray eyes. "A year ago, I was counting pennies to buy groceries. Now... I’m standing here with you."
Dante smiled—a warm, radiant smile that reached his eyes and made my heart flutter just as fiercely as the first time he kissed me.
"Nothing about you was an accident, Olivia," he said softly, cupping my cheek with his calloused hand. "You saved Orion’s life. But more than that... you saved mine. You pulled me out of the darkness when I thought I was already dead."
Dante reached into the pocket of his linen pants.
He slowly lowered himself onto one knee on the weathered timber of the porch.
My breath caught in my throat, my hands flying up to cover my mouth.
Orion sat down squarely beside Dante, puffing out his muscular chest, looking back and forth between us as if he had rehearsed this exact moment for weeks.
Dante opened a small black velvet box, revealing a flawless, brilliant-cut diamond ring flanked by two deep blue sapphires—representing the ocean that had given us our peace.
"Olivia Marshall," Dante said, his voice deep, rich, and trembling with an emotion so profound it brought tears spilling over my lashes. "I spent my entire life building fortresses to keep the world out. But with you, I finally found a home. Will you marry me?"
I didn't hesitate for a single heartbeat.
"Yes," I choked out through my tears, dropping to my knees beside him. "A thousand times, yes!"
May you like
Dante slid the ring onto my finger, his hands shaking slightly, before pulling me into a fierce, breathtaking kiss.
Beside us, Orion threw his head back and let out a triumphant, joyous howl that echoed across the cliffs and out over the shimmering ocean, sealing our family’s new dawn beneath the endless, open sky.
