Chapter 9 - Blood and Redemption

A tactical flashbang grenade detonated in the center of the warehouse, a blinding sphere of white light accompanied by a concussive shockwave that shattered the remaining glass overhead.
Enzo shrieked, clutching his ears as he was knocked off his feet. Lorenzo stumbled back against a rusted container, drawing his revolver with trembling hands.
Through the smoke and falling debris charged a black nightmare.
Orion.
The Cane Corso wore a tactical Kevlar vest, his eyes blazing like twin embers of hellfire. He wasn't limping. He wasn't slowed by the stun darts. He was an unstoppable force of sheer, unadulterated vengeance.
Two of Falcone’s guards raised assault rifles, but Orion hit them like a freight train. He tore into the first man’s shoulder, flipping him through the air, before pivoting with lethal speed to crush the second guard’s wrist, sending his weapon clattering across the concrete.
Behind the hound came Dante Moretti.
Dante moved with terrifying, surgical precision. Dressed in full tactical black, his assault rifle raised to his eye, he fired with devastating accuracy. Three shots, three down. He didn't shout commands. He didn't hesitate. He was an angel of death sweeping through the warehouse.
Marco and four elite operatives fanned out behind him, laying down a suppressing hail of fire that pinned the remaining Falcone loyalists behind the steel containers.
"Kill the girl! Enzo, kill the girl!" Lorenzo screamed frantically, firing blindly into the smoke.
Enzo scrambled to his knees, his face twisted in psychotic desperation. He drew his pistol, aiming it directly at my chest where I sat tied to the chair. "Die, you bitch—"
Orion leaped.
The massive black hound cleared fifteen feet of open space in a single, magnificent bound. He slammed his full two hundred pounds directly into Enzo’s chest just as the gun went off.
*BANG.*
The bullet went wild, embedding itself in the wooden pallet beside me.
Enzo hit the concrete with bone-shattering force, Orion pinned on top of him. The dog’s jaws snapped shut around Enzo’s throat, pressing with lethal pressure, holding the screaming, weeping man entirely immobilized beneath his massive paws. One wrong twitch, and Enzo’s windpipe would be severed.
Meanwhile, Lorenzo Falcone turned to flee toward the rear emergency exit.
He made it three paces before Dante materialized out of the smoke like a phantom.
Dante didn't fire his weapon. He stepped inside Lorenzo’s guard, his left hand parrying the older man's gun arm while his right fist struck Lorenzo’s jaw with the force of a sledgehammer. Lorenzo’s head snapped back, his gun flying from his grip as he collapsed hard onto the wet concrete.
Dante stepped forward, planting his heavy combat boot squarely on Lorenzo’s chest, pinning him to the floor. The cold muzzle of Dante’s rifle pressed directly against the center of Falcone’s forehead.
The gunfire had ceased. The warehouse fell dead silent, save for the patter of rain and Enzo’s pathetic, muffled sobs beneath Orion’s paws.
"Dante... please..." Lorenzo choked out, blood bubbling from his split lips. "We can make a deal... Julian wouldn't want this... Julian was peaceful..."
Dante looked down at the man who had ordered his brother’s execution, his eyes completely devoid of mercy.
"Julian is dead," Dante whispered softly. "And I am not."
Dante didn't pull the trigger.
Instead, he glanced toward the wide double doors at the far end of the warehouse.
Flashing red and blue lights illuminated the rain-slicked pavement outside. Dozens of federal tactical vehicles screeched to a halt, sirens wailing in deafening unison. Marco had delivered the sealed evidence files to the Department of Justice forty minutes prior.
"Death is too quick for you, Lorenzo," Dante said coldly, stepping off the older man's chest. "You are going to spend the rest of your miserable life in an ADX supermax facility in Colorado. You will die alone in a concrete box, forgotten by the world."
Dante turned his back on his fallen enemy and sprinted across the warehouse toward me.
"Olivia!"
He dropped to his knees, his hands trembling as he drew a combat knife, slicing through the heavy zip-ties binding my wrists and ankles.
The moment the bonds fell away, I threw my arms around his neck, sobbing uncontrollably into his shoulder. "Dante... oh God, Dante..."
"I have you," he breathed, his voice breaking as he buried his face in my hair, holding me with a desperation that crushed the air from my lungs. "I have you, my love. You’re safe. It’s over. I swear to God, it’s over."
A low, wet whimper sounded beside us.
I looked down. Orion had stepped off Enzo—who was promptly handcuffed by federal agents flooding the room. The brave dog stepped toward us, his tail giving a weak wag, before his front legs buckled.
"Orion!" I screamed, dropping to the floor beside him.
Along his left flank, beneath the edge of his tactical vest, a dark, thick pool of crimson was spreading through his midnight fur. A stray ricochet from the initial firefight had torn through his side.
"No, no, no, sweet boy, stay with me!" I wept, pressing both hands against the wound to stem the bleeding.
Orion looked at me with those magnificent, weary amber eyes, resting his heavy jaw weakly in my lap. He gave my hand one soft, reassuring lick.

"Marco! Get the medic! NOW!" Dante roared, his voice echoing through the rafters, raw with an agony that shook his entire soul. "Don't you dare die on me, Orion! Don't you dare!"
