Chapter 16 - The Vow

(Word count target: ~2000 words)

Three months later.

The cliffside estate in Newport, Rhode Island, was decorated in thousands of white hydrangeas, eucalyptus garlands, and flickering crystal lanterns. The gentle roar of the Atlantic Ocean provided a natural symphony as two hundred guests sat in the open-air pavilion overlooking the water.

This wasn't a secret court filing. This wasn't a photo op for a custody magistrate.

This was our real wedding.

I stood behind the grand white doors of the bridal suite, wearing an exquisite ivory lace gown with a sweeping train, a delicate veil framing my face. My reflection in the full-length mirror took my breath away. I looked happy, loved, and whole.

A soft knock sounded at the door.

Mrs. Gable stepped into the room, wearing a sophisticated navy dress. Her eyes welled with rare, emotional tears as she looked at me.

“You are breathtaking, Clara,” Mrs. Gable said softly, adjusting my lace train. “Mr. Russo is pacing the altar like a nervous teenager.”

I laughed softly. “Is he?”

“I’ve worked for the Russo family for twenty years,” Mrs. Gable said, holding my hands gently. “I have never seen that man look at anything the way he looks at you. You saved his soul, child.”

The door opened wider, and six-year-old Sophia skipped into the room. She wore a matching ivory flower-girl dress with a small wreath of white roses in her hair, holding a basket of petals.

“Clara! It’s time!” Sophia cheered, her face glowing with pure excitement. “Daddy says if you don't come out in two minutes, he’s going to break down the doors!”

I giggled, dropping to my knees to kiss her cheek. “We wouldn't want him breaking down doors today, sweet girl. Let's go.”

The wedding march began to play.

The heavy mahogany doors opened onto the cliffside lawn.

I walked down the petal-covered aisle on Marko’s arm—who had proudly insisted on escorting me in place of the father I had never known.

At the end of the aisle stood Dante.

He wore a custom black tuxedo that made him look impossibly regal, handsome, and powerful. But as his gray eyes locked onto me walking toward him, the formidable boss completely vanished. His breath hitched, his jaw working as tears shone in his eyes.

When Marko placed my hand in Dante’s, Dante gripped my fingers tightly, as if he would never let go.

“You look like an angel,” Dante whispered, his deep voice thick with emotion.

“You don't look too bad yourself, Mr. Russo,” I whispered back with a radiant smile.

The officiant stepped forward, speaking words of love, resilience, and family. But when it came time for the vows, Dante pulled a folded piece of paper from his pocket, looking directly into my eyes.

“Clara,” Dante spoke, his voice echoing across the ocean cliffside, clear and powerful. “I used to believe that power was built of stone, steel, and silence. I built a fortress to protect myself, and in doing so, I locked out the world. Then you walked into a restaurant on a cold rainy night, picked up my broken daughter, and brought warmth back into a house that was dying.”

He took a deep breath, his thumb gently stroking my knuckles.

“You didn't just save Sophia, Clara. You saved me from the dark. I promise to cherish you, honor you, protect your dreams, and love you with every beat of my heart until my last breath. You are my home.”

Tears rained down my cheeks as I looked up into his stormy, loving eyes. I held his hands, speaking my own vows clearly into the wind:

“Dante, I used to think dreams were things you had to fight for alone in the dark. But with you and Sophia, I found a family I never knew I was missing. I promise to stand beside you in every storm, to fill our home with laughter, and to love you fiercely for all the days of my life. My heart is yours, forever.”

“By the power vested in me,” the officiant announced smilingly, “I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss your bride.”

Dante didn't wait. He pulled me into his arms, dipping me slightly as his mouth met mine in a deep, breathtaking, passionate kiss that brought the entire audience of two hundred guests to their feet in roaring applause.

Sophia ran up, throwing her arms around our legs, laughing brightly as white rose petals rained down from the sky.

Dante lifted both of us into his massive arms, holding his wife and his daughter tight against his chest under the brilliant summer sun.

We were complete.
