Chapter 17 - The Family Expands

(Word count target: ~2000 words)

One year later.

The autumn air over the Long Island estate was crisp and golden.

The bakery in SoHo was now one of Manhattan’s premier patisseries, featured in national magazines, running smoothly with an exceptional staff while I managed creative designs and expansion plans.

On this quiet Saturday afternoon, the estate garden was filled with the sound of laughter.

Seven-year-old Sophia was running across the lush green lawn with a tiny golden retriever puppy Dante had bought her for her birthday, her dark curls bouncing in the sunlight.

I sat in a comfortable teak lounge chair under the shade of a massive oak tree, wearing a soft pastel sundress. My hand rested gently over the soft, rounded swell of my baby bump.

I was six months pregnant with a baby boy.

Footsteps sounded on the grass.

Dante walked across the lawn, carrying a tray with a glass of iced tea and a warm berry scone he had brought from the bakery. He had traded his usual suit for a dark cashmere sweater and jeans, looking relaxed, happy, and breathtakingly handsome.

He set the tray on the side table, kneeling down beside my lounge chair.

He placed his broad, warm hand gently over my pregnant belly.

As if sensing his father’s touch, the baby gave a firm, energetic kick right beneath Dante’s palm.

Dante’s gray eyes lit up with that brilliant, tender awe that always melted my heart. A soft, radiant smile broke across his face.

“He’s active today,” Dante murmured, leaning down to press a soft kiss directly to my bump.

“He knows his dad is here,” I smiled, running my fingers through Dante’s dark hair.

Dante rested his chin on my lap, looking up into my face with an expression of pure, unadulterated devotion.

“How are you feeling, my love?” he asked softly.

“Perfect,” I replied, leaning down to press my lips to his. “Just perfect.”

Sophia came running over, her puppy tumbling behind her, and sat down on the grass beside Dante, resting her chin on the edge of my lounge chair.

“Is little brother kicking again?” Sophia asked eagerly.

“He sure is, sweet girl,” Dante smiled, pulling Sophia onto his lap. “He’s practicing his soccer kicks.”

Sophia giggled, reaching out her small hand to gently touch my stomach. “I’m going to teach him how to bake scones when he gets big, Clara.”

“He’s going to have the best big sister in the world,” I said, kissing her forehead.

Dante looked around our vibrant, warm home—at his thriving daughter, his beautiful wife, and the new life growing between us.

The darkness of his past, the cold walls of his fortress, the fears that had once controlled his life—all of it was gone, replaced by an impenetrable shield of love, peace, and family.

He reached out, taking my left hand, his thumb tracing the sparkling diamond ring resting beside my wedding band.

“Thank you, Clara,” Dante whispered, his voice deep, rough with emotion.

I smiled, squeezing his hand tightly. “For what, my love?”

May you like

“For falling asleep in that restaurant,” Dante murmured, his stormy gray eyes shining with endless love. “For refusing to give up on my daughter. And for giving me a life I never dreamed I could have.”

I pulled his face to mine, kissing him deeply, passionately, as the warm golden sunlight bathed our family in everlasting peace.
