Chapter 3 - The Confession

I remained standing directly behind Beatrice’s chair, processing the casual, brazen confession of financial betrayal and marital infidelity as if it were a scientific formula.

For months, my gut had been telling me something was wrong. Bank statements had shown minor discrepancies, unexplained wire transfers, and withdrawals that didn't align with our household expenses. Each time I asked Lucas, he gaslit me, calling me paranoid and accusing me of working myself into a neurotic frenzy. Hearing his mother proudly broadcast his embezzlement and adultery in front of thirty-eight witnesses wasn't just a shock—it was the final, blinding flash of clarity I needed.

But Beatrice wasn't finished. She wasn't just here to eat for free and gloat; she was here to execute a corporate coup on behalf of her golden boy.

With a theatrical, heavy sigh, she reached down into her oversized designer leather tote bag and pulled out a thick, legal-sized manila folder. With a sharp thwack, she slapped it down onto the white linen tablecloth right beside a half-eaten plate of seared scallops.

"Actually, Camilla, since you're already here playing waitress, we have some business to conclude," Beatrice said, her tone shifting seamlessly from gossipy brunch companion to cold, commanding matriarch. She slid the folder across the table toward me and tapped a sharp, painted fingernail against the heavy cardstock cover. "Lucas had his corporate lawyers draft this up this morning. It’s a formal transfer of ownership agreement. You’re going to sign over sixty percent of Lumina's voting shares directly to him."

The entire table went from quiet to tomb-like. Even the most oblivious socialites at the edges of the table recognized the aggressive shift in atmosphere.

I stared down at the manila folder, letting out a breath that was dangerously close to a laugh. "Excuse me?"

"Don't play deaf and dumb with me, Camilla," Beatrice sneered, her eyes flashing with contempt. "Lucas is building a new life, and he needs liquid assets to secure his future with his new partner. Since his name and his family's social standing essentially built this place—let's be honest, without the Whitaker name, you'd still be flipping burgers in some greasy diner—it's only fair he legally takes the reins of the business. You’ll stay on as head chef, of course, on a fixed salary with no equity. But the business will officially be his. Sign it now, right here on the dotted line, and I won't make a scene about your little managerial failures in front of my friends."

The sheer, monumental delusion of the demand was breathtaking. It was the final puzzle piece I needed to complete the picture of the parasites I had married into.

I didn't scream. I didn't burst into tears, and I didn't throw the remaining wine in her face, satisfying as that might have been.

Instead, I calmly and deliberately set the heavy wine bottle down on the adjacent service station. I reached into the deep pocket of my chef's apron and pulled out my smartphone.

Without breaking eye contact with Beatrice’s triumphant smirk, I dialed a number I had saved on my top speed dial and hit speakerphone.

The line rang twice before a crisp, professional voice answered.

"Marcus," I said clearly and distinctly into the quiet dining room. "Are we ready?"

"All set, Camilla," my attorney’s sharp, authoritative voice echoed clearly from the phone's speaker, cutting through the silence like a scalpel. "The emergency asset freeze went into effect ten minutes ago across all commercial and personal accounts. The comprehensive forensic accounting report documenting every single unauthorized wire transfer has been formally filed with the district attorney regarding your husband's systemic embezzlement. Furthermore, Lucas was just formally served with divorce papers at his corporate office twenty minutes ago. He is currently locked out of every joint and business account he ever touched."

The smug, triumphant smile on Beatrice’s face instantly vanished, replaced by an ashen, bloodless mask of utter confusion and sudden, mounting terror.

"What is this?" Beatrice stammered, half-rising from her chair. "Who is that? What are you doing?"

"I’m cleaning house, Beatrice," I said smoothly, ending the call with a single tap of my thumb and slipping the phone back into my apron pocket. I reached down, picked up her ridiculous manila folder, and dropped it squarely into a nearby busboy's stainless steel trash bin.

"Surprise," I continued, my voice dropping an octave, carrying an icy authority that silenced every breath at the table. "I've known about Lucas's little side pieces and secret accounts for months. I also noticed the missing funds from our corporate ledger. What you and your precious son call 'taking his cut,' the law defines very clearly as grand larceny and embezzlement. And since Lumina is an LLC registered solely in my name, established entirely with my pre-marital savings and my own blood, sweat, and tears, Lucas doesn't own a single napkin, fork, or square inch of flooring in this building."
