Chapter 7 - The Confrontation at the Office

Monday morning brought an unexpected visitor to Lumina before we opened for lunch service.
I was in my office upstairs, going over the weekly inventory sheet, when Gavin knocked tentatively on the open door.
"Camilla, you have a visitor downstairs," Gavin said, his expression tight and disapproving. "It's Lucas. He managed to slip past the host stand before security could intercept him. He looks... well, he looks like a man who just lost everything."
I set my clipboard down on the desk, smoothed down my apron, and stood up. "Let him up, Gavin. Let's get this over with in my territory."
A minute later, the office door pushed open, and Lucas stumbled inside.
Gone was the impeccably tailored corporate executive who used to sneer at my flour-dusted apron. His designer suit was rumpled, his hair uncombed, and his eyes were bloodshot and hollowed out by days of sheer panic and sleepless nights.
"Camilla," Lucas breathed out, taking a desperate step forward. He raised his hands in a placating gesture. "Camilla, please. You have to call your lawyer. You have to call the DA's office and tell them this is all some horrible misunderstanding."
I leaned back against my edge of my desk, crossing my arms over my chest. I didn't flinch, and I didn't offer him a seat.
"What's a misunderstanding, Lucas?" I asked, my voice dangerously calm. "The embezzlement? The secret apartment with your paralegal? Or the fact that your mother tried to bully me into signing over sixty percent of my restaurant to you on Friday?"
Lucas flinched, running a trembling hand through his hair. "That was Mom! That was her idea, you know how she is! She gets carried away with her social games! I didn't draft that transfer agreement, she pressured me into letting her handle things—"
"Stop talking, Lucas," I interrupted, my tone sharp enough to cut glass. "Just stop lying for five seconds. It’s pathetic."
He swallowed hard, his face flushing with humiliation and anger. "Camilla, we're husband and wife! You can't just ruin my life over a few financial irregularities! My firm suspended me this morning! My bank cards are declined everywhere I go! The police are talking about filing felony charges! If you do this, I'm going to prison!"
"Then I suggest you start practicing your orange jumpsuit styling tips," I replied without a single ounce of sympathy. "You spent ten years treating me like an unpaid servant in my own life while you played high-roller with money I earned with my own hands. You thought I was weak. You thought because I came from nothing and built this place from scratch, I'd just sit back and let your family rob me blind."
Lucas stared at me, the terrifying realization finally dawning on him that his gaslighting, his manipulation, and his aristocratic charm held zero power over me anymore.
"You're a cold, unfeeling bitch," he whispered, venom dripping from his voice.
"No, Lucas," I said, walking around the desk and stepping right up to him until we were eye-to-eye. "I'm a survivor. And you're finished."
May you like
I pointed a firm finger toward the office door. "Get out of my restaurant before I have Gavin call the police and have you dragged out in handcuffs for violating your restraining order. And don't ever come back."
Defeated, broken, and realizing the absolute finality of my words, Lucas turned on his heel and stumbled out of the office, slamming the door behind him with a hollow, pathetic thud.
