Chapter 15 - The Corporate Predator

"You knew," Brooke said, her voice shaking with a cold, rising fury as she kept the oak cane poised between them. "You knew the 1994 fire wasn't an accident. You knew my father stole the patents and let those men die."

Vance smiled, leaning back against the cushions with an unsettling casualness. "Knowing and proving are two very different things in corporate law, my dear. Your father was a ruthless genius, but he wasn't careful toward the end. He left a trail of breadcrumbs, and when he passed away, those breadcrumbs became public domain for anyone smart enough to follow them."

"You didn't just follow them," Brooke realized, the pieces suddenly snapping together in her mind with terrifying clarity. "You orchestrated the board ambush last month. You engineered the debt crisis. You wanted to tank the stock value so you could buy up the company's underlying assets for pennies on the dollar!"

"And I would have gotten away with it too," Vance said, his smile fading into a look of cold, calculating ambition, "if you hadn't played the hero and pulled off that miraculous debt restructuring on Christmas Eve. You ruined months of meticulous planning, Brooke."

He leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, his eyes locking onto hers with hypnotic intensity.

"Which brings us to why I'm here tonight," Vance continued smoothly. "Arthur’s ledger contains the original patents, the suppressed police reports, and the wire transfer receipts from 1994. If I hand those documents to the Department of Justice, Whitmore Industrial goes into immediate receivership. Every asset is frozen. Every share becomes worthless paper. You lose everything—your family name, your company, your legacy."

Brooke’s breath hitched. "And if I don't?"

"If you hand the ledger over to me right now," Vance said, spreading his hands in a gesture of magnanimous compromise, "I quietly bury the documents. I walk away from the board, and I let you run your little family business in peace. You keep your clean conscience, and I keep my silence."

Brooke stared at him. The offer sounded like a lifeline—a way out of an impossible nightmare. But looking into Vance’s cold, dead eyes, she knew the truth. A predator like Vance didn't make deals to let his prey go; he made deals to trap them forever. Once she handed over the ledger, she would be completely at his mercy, a puppet dancing on strings pulled by a man far more dangerous than her father ever was.

"And if I refuse?" Brooke asked quietly.

Vance stood up slowly, adjusting his suit jacket with agonizing precision. He walked toward her, stopping just out of arm's reach.

"Then tomorrow morning, the federal prosecutor's office will receive an anonymous package containing copies of every single document Arthur gave you," Vance whispered, his voice smooth as silk and cold as ice. "And by tomorrow afternoon, you'll be standing on the courthouse steps watching your father's empire burn to the ground—with your name right beside his on the indictment."

He turned and walked toward the door, pausing just before the threshold.

"You have twenty-four hours to decide, Brooke. Call me when you're ready to make the smart choice."

The door clicked shut behind him.

Brooke stood alone in the dark apartment, the weight of the world pressing down on her shoulders. She had survived the boardroom. She had survived the family betrayal. But now, she was facing a choice that would either destroy her family completely or force her to become something she had spent her entire life fighting against: ruthless.
