Chapter 17 - The Counter-Offensive

The basement archives of Whitmore Industrial were dark, dusty, and smelled faintly of vinegar and decaying paper—the chemical signature of old blueprints stored improperly for decades. Armed with a high-powered flashlight and a pair of white cotton archival gloves, Brooke and Hannah tore through filing cabinets, storage crates, and microfiche reels that hadn't seen the light of day since the late 1980s.
"If Vance has copies of Arthur’s ledger," Brooke said, her hands moving rapidly through a stack of yellowed payroll logs, "he must have obtained them from the secondary storage facility my father maintained in New Jersey before he died."
Hannah, kneeling beside a metal crate marked *1992-1995 Operations*, looked up with a sudden flash of realization. "New Jersey? Wait—look at this."
She pulled out a thick, black binder labeled *CONFIDENTIAL: INTERNAL AUDIT*.
Brooke hurried over, dropping to her knees beside her friend. Hannah flipped open the binder. Inside were not engineering schematics, but internal bank statements, wire transfer receipts, and—most importantly—signed corporate resolutions bearing not just Robert Whitmore’s signature, but Vance Sterling’s as well.
"Good grief," Hannah breathed, her eyes widening as she read the fine print. "Vance wasn't just a bystander to the 1994 cover-up. He was the architect of the financial cleanup. *He* structured the offshore accounts that funneled the hush money to Arthur Pendelton."
Brooke stared at the signature at the bottom of the document. *Vance Sterling, Chief Financial Officer (1993).*
The pieces of the puzzle violently snapped together, forming a picture far more sinister than Brooke had ever imagined. Vance hadn't just discovered her father’s sins; he had been an active participant in them from day one. He had helped cover up the fire, laundered the blood money, and positioned himself over the last thirty years to inherit the entire empire by blackmailing first Robert, and now Brooke.
"He lied to me," Brooke whispered, a cold rage surging through her veins. "He didn't just want to take over the company—he wanted to bury anyone who could ever point a finger at his own complicity."
"We have him," Hannah said, her voice trembling with excitement as she tapped the binder. "These documents prove Vance was knee-deep in the embezzlement and the cover-up from the very beginning. If we hand this to the federal prosecutor along with Arthur’s ledger, Vance goes down right beside your father."
Brooke stood up, dusting off her knees, her jaw set with absolute determination. "We aren't just handing it to the prosecutor, Hannah."
"What do you mean?"
"Vance called a special emergency board meeting for 8:00 PM tonight," Brooke said, her voice dropping into a tone of quiet menace. "He sent a notice to all remaining shareholders claiming I’m unfit to manage the restructuring and demanding an immediate vote of no confidence to strip me of my CEO title."
Hannah’s jaw dropped. "He’s staging a coup?"

"He thinks he is," Brooke replied, a cold, confident smile touching the corners of her lips. "He thinks he’s walking into a slaughterhouse where I’m the lamb. But we’re going to give him a surprise he’ll never forget."
