Chapter 20 - THE UNFINISHED HORIZON

The sun was setting behind the Olympic Mountains, painting the Seattle skyline in breathtaking shades of gold, lavender, and deep indigo.
Roman and I stood on the back deck of our home, holding mugs of hot tea while Maya chased fireflies across the freshly mown lawn, her joyful giggles echoing up into the warm summer night.
Dad was inside packing up the leftover barbecue, while Mom called out from the patio door to remind us that the wedding cake tasting was scheduled for Saturday morning.
Everything was in its right place. The past had been confronted, the ghosts had been laid to rest, and the future stretched out before us like an open, sunlit road with no speed limits and no boundaries.
Roman wrapped his arms around my waist from behind, pulling me back against his chest as we watched Maya catch a firefly in her cupped hands, gasping in pure wonder when it lit up her palms.
"Penny for your thoughts, Mrs. Vance-to-be," Roman whispered against my ear, his breath warm in the evening breeze.
I smiled, resting my hands over his, feeling the absolute safety of his embrace.
"I was just thinking about how crazy it is that a single ultrasound picture thrown into a trash can could lead us right here," I murmured, my voice filled with quiet wonder.
"Trash can was her loss," Roman chuckled softly, pressing a tender kiss to the side of my neck. "Our greatest gain."
I turned around in his arms, wrapping my arms around his neck and looking up into his eyes, feeling the fierce, unshakeable love that had anchored us through every storm.
"Do you think we're finally safe, Roman? Do you think the story is really over?" I asked, a playful, teasing glint in my eye.
Roman smiled, leaning down to press his lips gently against mine.
"No, sweetheart," he murmured against my lips, a mysterious smile touching the corners of his mouth. "I don't think the story is over at all. In fact... I think we're only just beginning the best part."
Just as he finished speaking, my phone buzzed sharply in the pocket of my cardigan on the porch railing.
I pulled it out, glancing down at the screen. It was an email notification from the county land registry office, regarding an anonymous, sealed property deed that had just been legally transferred into my name—a final, unexpected bequest from an estate in Zurich, containing a handwritten note from Margaret’s personal notary that simply read: *“For the granddaughter’s future. Use it wisely.”*
My breath hitched in my throat as I stared at the screen, reading the address of the property listed on the deed—a sprawling, historic coastal estate overlooking the cliffs of the Pacific Northwest, a place I had only ever seen in glossy travel magazines.
Roman looked over my shoulder, his eyebrows shooting up in absolute shock as he read the screen.
"What... what is that?" he whispered.

I looked up from the phone, meeting his stunned eyes as a slow, bewildered smile spread across my face, realizing that the Rossi legacy hadn't quite finished surprising us yet.
To be continued...
