Chapter 27 - THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF ROSSI

The wailing sirens reached a crescendo right outside the front courtyard, their red and blue emergency lights painting the vaulted stone walls of the foyer in flashing, frantic colors. Within seconds, heavy boots crunched across the gravel, and the oak front doors swung wide open to reveal the local sheriff, a broad-shouldered man with a weathered face and an uncompromising gaze, flanked by three armed deputies. "All right, what’s going on here?" Sheriff Miller demanded, his hand resting instinctively on his holster as his eyes swept the chaotic scene: Roman holding a terrified, sputtering Julian against the wall, Henderson cowering near the door, and Mrs. Gable looking down from the staircase like a queen surveying her realm. "Sheriff! Thank God!" Julian shrieked, struggling against Roman’s grip. "I’m Julian Rossi! This man is assaulting me! These people are squatting on private family property—!" "Shut up, Julian," Sheriff Miller interrupted dryly, pulling a pair of steel cuffs from his belt and stepping forward. "I received an encrypted data transmission from this estate five minutes ago containing a federal warrant and a restraining order signed by Judge Vance, explicitly barring you and your associates from coming within five hundred yards of Cliffwood Manor or Clara Rossi. And Mr. Gable... ah, Mrs. Gable informed us of an active trespass in progress." Roman slowly relaxed his arm, letting Julian slump unceremoniously to the floor like a deflated balloon. Roman stepped back, wrapping a protective arm around my waist and pulling me close against his side as the deputies moved in, hauling Julian up by his arms and snapping the cold steel cuffs around his wrists. "This isn't over!" Julian screamed, his face purple with rage and humiliation as the deputies dragged him toward the open door. "Clara! You hear me?! You’re playing with forces you don’t understand! The board will crush you! The family will destroy you!" "The family," I said softly, stepping forward so Julian could see the calm, unshakeable power in my eyes, "is already gone, Julian. You just didn't realize you were standing in the ruins." Henderson was escorted out moments later without a word of protest, his briefcase clutched nervously to his chest like a shield. As the flashing cruiser lights faded down the winding driveway, the heavy silence of the coastal night settled back over Cliffwood Manor. Mrs. Gable descended the stairs slowly, her expression serene, and paused in front of us. She dipped her head in a respectful, formal bow. "The estate is secure, madam. Shall I have dinner served in the main dining room?" I looked up at Roman, a genuine, radiant smile breaking across my face as I leaned my head against his shoulder. "Actually, Mrs. Gable," I said, taking Roman’s warm hand in mine, "I think we’ll have dinner on the terrace. I want to watch the stars over the Pacific."
