Chapter 10 - The Master Architect

On a clear, warm autumn evening one year after the fateful wedding at Grandview Estate, the city of Chicago hosted its annual Architectural Gala at the historic Navy Pier Auditorium.

The hall was packed with the city's elite designers, engineers, civic leaders, and media press. Golden chandeliers illuminated sleek black-tie tables, and a live orchestra played softly near the stage.

Rowan sat at the head table as the guest of honor, flanked by Liam and her core team from Apex. She wore an exquisite, floor-length deep burgundy velvet gown—bold, elegant, and entirely her own style. On her wrist, her mechanical watch ticked steadily, a quiet symbol of her independent journey.

The host stepped up to the podium, tapping the microphone to command the room's attention.

"Ladies and gentlemen," the presenter announced, his voice echoing across the auditorium. "Tonight, we honor an architect who redefined what it means to build in our city. Someone who proved that true strength doesn't come from flashy illusions, corporate shortcuts, or inherited status—but from integrity, precision, and unyielding truth."

The screen behind the stage lit up with breathtaking photographs of Rowan’s completed projects: the restored West Loop industrial studio, the Winnetka Community Arts Center, and the stunning, sun-drenched Riverfront Library.

"The recipient of the 2027 Chicago Excellence in Architecture Award is... Rowan Reynolds!"

The auditorium erupted into a thunderous standing ovation!

Rowan stood up gracefully, surrounded by the cheers of her team and the genuine respect of her peers. She walked up the carpeted stairs to the stage, accepting the heavy crystal trophy with a serene, confident smile.

She stepped up to the podium, looking out over the crowd of hundreds of people.

"Thank you," Rowan said into the microphone, her voice clear, calm, and carrying effortless authority across the room. "Years ago, someone told me that my place was in the back of house—hidden away in the dark while others took the credit for the structure."

She paused, looking up toward the high glass arches of the auditorium, where the city skyline glowed brilliantly against the night sky.

"I learned that a building—and a life—is only as strong as what lies beneath the surface," Rowan continued, her eyes shining with quiet triumph. "When you build on truth, you don't ever have to hide. You just have to build high enough for everyone to see the light."

The room burst into another round of deafening applause as Rowan raised her trophy into the warm light.
