Chapter 4 - The Uninvited Guest of Honor

By the time Rowan parked her car two blocks away from the Grandview Estate, the sparkling facade of the wedding venue was already showing cracks in its glittering armor.

Through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the grand ballroom, she could see guests milling about nervously. The string quartet had stopped playing. Several caterers were standing near the service doors with folded arms, refusing to clear the appetizer plates.

Paul Vance stood near the center dance floor, his face the color of spoiled milk, shouting frantically into his smartphone while his new son-in-law—a bewildered tech executive named Julian—tried to calm him down.

Camille was nowhere in sight. She was likely locked in the bridal suite, having a full-scale emotional collapse over her ruined designer train and canceled honeymoon flights.

Rowan adjusted the small, wrapped gift box under her arm. She didn't sneak in through the service entrance this time. She walked straight up the marble front steps, past the towering floral arches, and pushed open the massive mahogany doors of the main foyer.

The contrast between the room's opulence and its current panic was breathtaking.

As Rowan stepped into the ballroom, her striking red off-the-shoulder dress immediately caught the eye of several guests who recognized her from the family seating chart. Whispers began to ripple through the crowd.

Paul stopped shouting into his phone. His eyes bulged as he spotted his eldest daughter gliding across the parquet floor toward him as if she owned the building—which, technically, she now did through the federal receivership.

"Rowan," Paul hissed, marching toward her with his fists clenched so tightly his knuckles were bloodless. "What the hell are you doing back here? Did you do this?!"

He was trembling with suppressed rage, dangerously close to causing a scene in front of seventy high-society witnesses.

Rowan didn't flinch. She stopped two feet away from him, her expression an impenetrable wall of calm.

"Good evening, Dad," Rowan said clearly, her voice carrying easily across the hushed ballroom. "You look stressed. You should really sit down before your blood pressure does what your real estate portfolio is currently doing."

"You vindictive little witch!" Paul snarled, lunging forward as if to grab her arm.

Before his fingers could even graze her fabric, two burly men in dark suits stepped out from the shadows near the entrance. Federal marshals. They flashed their gold badges instantly, positioning themselves between Paul and Rowan like a human fortress.

"Mr. Paul Vance?" the lead marshal asked, his voice flat and authoritative. "Step away from Mrs. Reynolds. We have a federal warrant for your arrest regarding wire fraud, corporate identity theft, and interstate financial manipulation."

The ballroom erupted into absolute chaos.

Gasps echoed from every corner of the room. Julian, the groom, dropped his champagne flute, the crystal shattering against the marble floor with a sharp clink. Several aunts covered their mouths in horror, while cousins scrambled to pull out their phones to record the unfolding disaster.

Paul stumbled backward, his face turning an alarming shade of purple. "Arrest? Are you out of your mind?! I'm Paul Vance! I built this city's skyline!"

"You built a house of cards, Dad," Rowan said softly, stepping around the marshals.

She reached out and placed the small, perfectly wrapped gift box right into Paul’s trembling, open hand.

"Open it," she whispered. "It's your wedding present."
