Chapter 4 - Blood on the Snow

The deafening crack of sniper fire shattered the winter silence, followed immediately by the staccato bark of automatic weapons echoing from the eastern perimeter.

Gabriel covered Elena and Maisie with his entire body, pinning them against the floorboards beside the bed. Glass showered over his back, tearing through his suit jacket, but he didn't flinch.

“Mama!” Maisie screamed, her small hands clutching Elena’s shirt.

“Hush, baby, look at me, look at Mommy,” Elena whispered frantically, wrapping her arms around the girl, her own body shaking as she looked up into Gabriel’s eyes.

“Stay flat,” Gabriel commanded, his voice cold, razor-sharp, completely stripped of panic. He pulled the .38 revolver Elena had dropped and clicked off the safety. “Marco!” he roared into the radio clipped to his shoulder. “Report!”

Static hissed, followed by Marco’s breathless shouting over heavy gunfire. *“Southern gate is down, Boss! Black vans—ten, maybe fifteen shooters! They’re using suppressors and thermal optics! They came for the servants' quarters!”*

“They know,” Gabriel growled, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle twitched. “Silvio saw the box. Or his scouts spotted Elena. Move the primary defense to Sector 3. Cut their line of retreat. Nobody leaves this estate breathing.”

*“Copy that!”*

Gabriel turned back to Elena. Her face was pale, but the terror had transformed into maternal survival instinct. She was the woman he had fallen in love with—a fighter, not a victim.

“Can you run?” Gabriel asked her.

“I can run,” Elena said.

Gabriel leaned down, scooped Maisie into his left arm, and pulled Elena up with his right. Maisie buried her face in his neck, her tiny arms wrapping around his throat with surprising strength. The sensation of his daughter clinging to him sent a jolt of fierce, protective power through his veins.

“Hold on to me, little bird,” Gabriel whispered to Maisie. “Nobody touches you. Nobody.”

“I’m not scared, Daddy,” Maisie muffled against his collar.

The word *Daddy* hit Gabriel like a physical shockwave, but he had no time to process it. He kicked the shattered remnants of the door open and stepped out into the hallway, gun raised.

Two men in black tactical gear rounded the far corner, submachine guns raised.

Gabriel didn't hesitate. He fired three rounds in rapid succession. The first shooter dropped instantly with a center-mass shot; the second took a bullet through the shoulder, staggering back with a scream before Gabriel closed the distance and eliminated the threat with a double-tap.

Elena picked up one of the fallen men’s discarded MP5 submachine guns, expertly checking the chamber with a crisp metallic snap.

Gabriel raised an eyebrow despite the chaos.

“I didn't spend four years hiding without learning how to kill,” Elena said coldly.

“Remind me never to lie to you,” Gabriel muttered.

They moved quickly through the service corridors, bypassing the grand foyer where the sound of heavy assault rifle fire rattled the mansion’s foundations. Gabriel knew the layout of his estate better than any architect. He led them through an unmarked steel door disguised as wood paneling, down a narrow spiral staircase that descended into the mansion’s subterranean reinforced bunker—a safe room designed to withstand a military siege.

He punched an eight-digit code into the biometric keypad. The heavy blast door hissed open.

Gabriel carried Maisie inside and set her gently on a leather sofa. The room was stocked with medical supplies, satellite comms, and enough ammunition to fight a small war.

“You stay here,” Gabriel said, turning toward the heavy vault door. “Once this door seals from the inside, not even a tank shell can crack it.”

Elena grabbed his wrist. Her grip was tight, desperate. “Where are you going?”

“Silvio is out there,” Gabriel said, his eyes black with lethal resolve. “He came into my home to slaughter my family. If I don't end him tonight, we will spend the rest of our lives looking over our shoulders. I won’t let Maisie grow up in the dark like I did.”

Elena searched his eyes. She saw the monster that the rest of the world feared—the ruthless mafia kingpin who ruled Chicago with an iron fist. But beneath that darkness, she saw the man who had wept on her bedroom floor just ten minutes ago.

“You come back to us,” Elena ordered, her voice trembling. “Do you hear me, Gabriel Marchetti? You don't get to find us just to leave us again.”

Gabriel pulled her into him, crushing his lips against hers in a fierce, bruising kiss that tasted of salt, gunsmoke, and four years of stolen time. When he pulled away, Elena was breathless.

He turned to Maisie, kneeling down to eye level.

“Keep this safe for me, little bird,” Gabriel said, slipping the antique silver lighter into her small hand. “I’ll be back for Christmas morning.”

Maisie nodded solemnly, closing her fingers over the silver sparrow. “Promise?”

“I promise.”

Gabriel stepped out into the corridor. The blast door sealed shut behind him with a heavy, hydraulic thud.

The lock engaged. His family was safe.

Gabriel turned toward the stairs, chambering a round into his sidearm, the cold rage of a Marchetti boss settling into his bones.

Tonight, Chicago would burn.
