Chapter 8 - The Price of Treason

The crack of gunfire inside the enclosed grand ballroom was deafening.

Screams erupted from the high-society guests as women dropped to the floor in their evening gowns and men scrambled behind marble pillars.

Silvio never pulled his trigger.

Before his finger could apply pressure to the hammer, Elena moved with the terrifying speed of a mother protecting her child. With a sharp, practiced motion, she whipped off her high-heeled shoe and drove the steel stiletto heel directly into Silvio’s wrist with brutal force.

Silvio howled in agony as the bone in his wrist fractured, the revolver clattering uselessly to the marble floor.

In the next heartbeat, Gabriel closed the distance.

His left hand seized Silvio by the throat, lifting the sixty-two-year-old man completely off his feet and slamming him backward onto the banquet table, shattering fine china and crystal decanters.

Gabriel’s right hand drew his custom 1911 pistol, pressing the cold steel barrel directly between Silvio’s eyes.

“Gabriel... please...” Silvio choked out, blood leaking from his nose as he clawed at Gabriel’s iron grip. “We’re... we’re blood...”

“You stopped being blood the second you wired that car,” Gabriel whispered, his voice dangerously low, vibrating with four years of buried agony. “You stole four years of my daughter’s life. You made my wife live like an animal in hiding.”

“Gabriel, wait!” Don Salvatore called out, stepping forward with his cane.

Gabriel didn't lower the gun. He didn't blink. “Give me one reason why I shouldn't paint this wall with his brains, Salvatore.”

“Because a king does not execute a traitor in the dirt like a common street thug,” Don Salvatore said firmly, his ancient eyes blazing with grim finality. “A king lets the law of the family pass judgment. Silvio Marchetti, by unanimous decree of the Commission, you are stripped of your name, your wealth, and your life. You belong to Gabriel now. Take him away.”

Marco and four armed enforcers moved in, dragging Silvio off the ruined table. Silvio kicked and screamed, begging for mercy, but not a single soul in the room looked at him. He was a dead man already, dragged down into the darkness from which he would never return.

Gabriel lowered his weapon, clicking the safety back on. He turned slowly toward Commissioner Barnes, who was trembling near the service exit, sweat pouring down his pale face.

“Commissioner,” Gabriel said, stepping toward him.

Barnes raised his shaking hands. “Gabriel, please... I didn't know about the child! I swear to God, Silvio told me you had gone rogue! I was just following procedure!”

“You take your tactical units, and you get out of my city,” Gabriel said softly, each word dripping with venom. “By midnight tomorrow, your resignation will be on the mayor’s desk. If I see your face in Chicago after sunrise, the federal authorities will receive a package detailing every bribe Silvio ever paid into your Cayman accounts. Do you understand me?”

Barnes nodded frantically, stumbling backward through the service doors like a whipped dog.

The ballroom fell into dead silence once more.

Gabriel turned back toward the center of the hall. Elena stood there, breathing heavily, holding Maisie against her hip. Maisie wasn't crying. She looked at Gabriel with wide, sparkling eyes, clutching her little stuffed rabbit.

Don Salvatore walked over, stopping before Elena and the little girl. The old Don bowed his head in a rare, profound gesture of respect.

“Welcome home, Elena,” Salvatore said softly. Then he looked down at Maisie. “And welcome to the family, little one. You have your father’s fire.”

Maisie tilted her head, then reached into her little Santa dress pocket and pulled out a small, foil-wrapped caramel. She held it out to the terrifying old mob boss.

“Here,” Maisie said cheerfully. “Merry Christmas, mister.”

Don Salvatore stared at the candy, then let out a rich, booming laugh that echoed off the high ceilings—a sound nobody had heard from the old man in twenty years. He took the caramel and placed it carefully in his breast pocket.

“The Marchetti bloodline is safe,” Salvatore declared to the room, raising his cane high. “To Gabriel Marchetti! The undisputed head of the Chicago Outfit!”

A thunderous chorus of cheers and raised glasses echoed through the grand ballroom. The war was over. The traitors were purged. The shadows that had suffocated the city for four long years had finally been broken by the light of truth.

Gabriel walked over to Elena and Maisie, wrapping his long arms around both of them, pulling them tight against his heart. Elena buried her face in his neck, letting out a sob of pure, unadulterated relief, while Maisie giggled, wrapping her small arms around them both.

“Let’s go home,” Gabriel whispered against Elena’s hair.

“Yes,” Elena replied, tears of joy streaming down her cheeks. “Take us home.”
