Chapter 6 - The Calm Before the Storm

Morning arrived with a blinding white sun reflecting off the Chicago snowdrift.
Inside the penthouse suite, the violence of the previous night felt like a fever dream. Gabriel had not slept a wink. He stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, dressed in a crisp black button-down shirt, watching his armed patrols circle the snow-covered grounds below.
A small tug at his pant leg broke his concentration.
Gabriel looked down. Maisie was standing there in an oversized silk robe borrowed from the guest closet, her bare feet peeking out from the hem. She held the silver lighter in one hand and a half-eaten gingerbread cookie in the other.
“Mister Boss?” she asked softly.
Gabriel crouched down so they were eye to eye. “You can call me Gabriel, Maisie. Or... whatever you want.”
Maisie tilted her head, her gaze searching his face with that uncanny, unnerving intelligence. “Mommy told me a secret this morning.”
Gabriel’s pulse jumped. “Did she?”
“She said you’re not just the boss of the house,” Maisie whispered conspiratorially. “She said you’re my daddy. And you were looking for us for a very, very long time.”
Gabriel felt a lump form in his throat—a sensation so foreign to him that it almost felt painful. He swallowed hard, reaching out to gently cup her cheek with a hand that had ended lives, but now trembled with awe.
“I was,” Gabriel choked out. “Every single day, Maisie. Every second.”
“Are you still sad?” she asked.
Gabriel looked at her hazel eyes—so bright, so full of innocent trust despite the gunshots that had shattered her window hours earlier.
“Not anymore,” Gabriel said honestly. “Never again.”
Maisie beamed, wrapping her small arms around his neck in a fierce, sticky embrace that smelled of sugar and cinnamon. Gabriel closed his eyes, burying his face in her hair, holding his daughter for the first time in the clear light of day. He silently swore an oath to whatever God watched over sinners that he would tear down the sky before he let anyone harm this child.
Elena stood in the doorway of the bedroom, watching them with a soft, tearful smile. She wore a tailored black dress Gabriel’s assistants had discreetly delivered an hour ago. The drab disguise of Nora Hayes was completely gone; in her place was Elena Vance, radiant, poised, and lethal.
“The council meeting is set for eight o’clock tonight,” Elena said quietly as Gabriel stood up, still holding Maisie on his hip. “Are you sure about this plan?”
“Silvio has bought three council members, but the other five are loyal to the old code,” Gabriel replied, his voice shifting back to the commanding tone of the syndicate head. “They follow strength, and they follow truth. What Silvio did four years ago—ordering a hit on family, attempting to murder an innocent woman and an unborn child—violates the sacred blood laws of the Outfit. When I lay the proof before the elders, Silvio won't have an army. He will have an execution squad waiting for him.”
“What proof do you have besides my testimony?” Elena asked. “Silvio will claim I’m an imposter. He’ll say you fabricated the whole thing.”
Gabriel reached into his desk drawer and pulled out a black leather ledger.
“Marco raided Silvio’s front office in the meatpacking district three hours ago while his men were still recovering from the failed hit,” Gabriel said coldly. “We found the financial wire transfers. Silvio paid the mechanic, Dominic Russo, two million dollars through an offshore shell company twenty-four hours before the car bombing. And Russo didn't die in an accident like Silvio claimed—he’s currently sitting in our basement, singing like a canary.”
Elena let out a shaky breath, a weight four years heavy finally lifting from her chest. “Dominic is alive?”
“He is,” Gabriel said. “And he’s terrified enough to confess before the entire Commission.”
Suddenly, the internal red comm line on Gabriel’s desk buzzed with high priority.
Gabriel answered, placing it on speaker. “Speak.”
Marco’s voice came through, tense and clipped. *“Boss, Silvio just launched an emergency protocol with the police commissioner. They’ve declared a citywide emergency alert regarding the gunfire at your estate last night. They’re claiming you went rogue and slaughtered your own staff. The police are preparing a convoy of tactical units to escort Silvio directly to the Grand Plaza Hotel under the guise of ‘protective custody’.”*
Elena’s eyes widened. “He’s using the police as human shields. If you attack him there, you’ll be fighting the entire city of Chicago.”
Gabriel’s eyes turned to cold, polished obsidian.
“Silvio thinks he’s built a fortress of blue uniforms,” Gabriel said, hanging up the phone. “He forgets who owns the foundation beneath it.”

He set Maisie down and looked at Elena. “Get ready. Tonight, we don't just attend a gala. We reclaim our names.”
