Chapter 4 - Cracking the Shell

While Detective Vance worked on securing the emergency warrants, I stayed glued to Ava’s bedside. Every time the door opened, her small frame convulsed with fear.

"Mommy's here, my love," I whispered over and over, running my fingers through the uninjured side of her soft blonde hair. "No one is ever going to hurt you again. I swear it on my life."

At 7:15 PM, my phone buzzed again. This time, it wasn't Eleanor. It was Kelly.

I signaled Sarah Lin, who sat beside me, and put the phone on speaker. "Kelly?"

"Nat... oh God, Nat, please tell me you're not at the police station," Kelly sobbed hysterically. The engine of her sedan was roaring in the background. "Mom is losing her mind. She told me to pack a bag and leave town. She said you called the hospital and that the state is going to get involved."

"Kelly, listen to me," I said, keeping my voice cold and steady. "Julian fractured Ava's collarbone. He split her head open. And you brought her to my doorstep and told me she tripped on a rug."

A sharp, ragged intake of breath came over the phone. "I... I didn't know she was fractured! Mom wouldn't let me look under the sweater! She swore she just bumped her forehead on the banister! She told me if I called 911, the police would raid the house, Julian would go to prison for life, and Mom would disown me. She said I’d be homeless, Nat! She took my car keys and forced me to drive Ava home!"

"You chose a violent criminal over a six-year-old child, Kelly," I said, my voice shaking with profound fury. "Your niece. The little girl who looked up to you."

"I'm scared, Natalie!" Kelly wailed. "Julian is still at the house! Mom is trying to get him a fake ID and cash from the safe in her bedroom! They’re planning to put him on a bus to Canada tonight! Mom told him to wait until dark!"

Sarah Lin's eyes widened. She scrambled to a notepad, furiously scribbling: *JULIAN IS STILL AT ELMWOOD TERRACE. PREPARING TO FLEE.*

She ripped the page off and dashed out of the room to hand it directly to Vance.

"Kelly," I said into the microphone. "If you want any chance of staying out of prison, you turn your car around right now and drive to the municipal police precinct on 5th Street. You walk inside, ask for Detective Vance, and you tell the truth. If you run, you are an accessory to Julian's crimes. You will go down with him."

"Mom said you’d turn on us..." Kelly whimpered.

"I didn't turn on you, Kelly. You and Eleanor turned on Ava. And for that, I will never forgive you. Go to the police, or go to prison."

I hung up the phone before she could reply.

Two minutes later, Detective Vance stepped back into the room, adjusting his tactical vest. The gentle demeanor was gone; he was in full law-enforcement mode.

"Warrant's signed, Natalie," Vance said, clicking his holster shut. "SWAT is en route to Elmwood Terrace. We're taking them down."
